I only care about what they are saying when they are talking about me. That goes for every culture I've encountered. Being able to read body language helps too. I hate being called white girl... it's so racist. :)

80% of statistics quoted on Internet forums are made up on the spot.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I used to be decent at it but I stopped learning it when I went to college. Pssh, who needs to learn new languages at some of the most diverse places in the country?

My husband is fluent in Spanish and much better than me. He picks language up easily. It's a gift for him.

Still, his mouth would drop when I told him what his friends were saying about me. He heard it, but never repeated it to me. He was like... who told you that?

Dawn, you should know that in Spanish people call eachother names like Blanca as a form of nickname. They used to call me "gringo" or the humorous name "grencho". It wasn't to be mean, just a nickname.

Sorry, Revi, because I wasn't clear in my last post. My hubby can speak 11 languages. He speaks Spanish better than myself.

I know what you mean about nicknames though, as they called me white girl all the time, but it was street Spanish and I'm not sure how to spell it. It begins with a W or the sound does anyway. It turned out to be a name that I didn't mind, but it hurt my feelings for a long time. And some girls are mean when they think you can't understand a word they are saying.

I used to be able to get along pretty well back when I was working, I had to as I worked at a county clinic and half the patients didn't speak English (older neighborhood). Since I quit working outside the home I've lost a lot of it; moving to Oklahoma made it worse as almost no one speaks Spanish here. :(

But I can still get along if I have to, just my grammar is terrible because I taught myself.

For those interested there is a website dedicated to peak oil in spanish that has interesting threads on world energy issues with some info on Latin America and Spain.

Their forums cover almost all the same topics we discuss here.....a few less nutcases than we have here but you can certainly find many of the same personalities, doomers, cornucopians, etc.

I can deliver a Spanish speaking baby. Empuje! Empuje! Empuje!.....Respiro profundo.

I also get a lot of mileage from dolor. If you change your inflection, it can be a statement, a question, a warning, etc.
