It's not necessarily a matter of sympathy. It's a matter of understanding the fundamentals of the problem, and therefore it can point towards a solution: stop creating pirates and break the cycle of violence.

Overpopulation as a the cause: perhaps, but we could be operating below carrying capacity and I'm sure there'd be those that will set up nice little systems of governance that ensure that most of the people do the work and a few of them keep most of the resulting wealth.

Why is it that convenience stores sometimes have armed security, but giant transport ships don't? I'm assuming there must be something I don't know about international maritime law.
