Well, here's the reply off of one of my lists I own, called "Hexenkunst", we study folkloric medicines of the Penn-Deitsch, whom I draw some of my ancestry from. I posted your question on my board, and these 2 folks answered me.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')rom what I've gleaned from reading, and talking with experts, is that there weren't really any herbal remedies for STD's in the past. Syphilis, the main killer, didn't make its appearance in Europe until after Columbus's second trip to the New World. Did it originate in America? No, it probably came from Africa, where he picked up a load of slaves to take to his colony. There was a disease in Africa at the time called Yaws, whose symptoms were much like syphilis.
Syphilis spread throughout Europe, killing and disfiguring millions. The herbalists were stymied by this disease, and powerless to cure it. Then along came a miner from Tyrol named Theophratus von Hoenheim, who figured that since Mercury was the God of medicine, salts of mercury should be used to treat this demonic plague, and set himself up as a physician. About half of his patients died, but the other half were cured of syphilis, and the man's reputation spread, and he changed his name to Paracelsus. When the pope at the time contracted this dread disease, he was treated, and cured, by Paracelsus. This gave the church the excuse to go after the herbalists, many of whom were Pagans. In all of the charges against the accused witches, the one they all had in common was "using an herb for medicine."
Mercury salts were used to treat STD's up until the discovery of penicillin, a medication derived from a fungus, hence an "herbal" med? Hope this helps you.

Hi All!
I thought I would add a bit to John's answer. There was an herbal
treatment for Syphilis, but it was not very popular with the Nobles!
this is because it was not just an herbal, but also a lifestyle
protocol. The protocol actually came from the treatment of Yaws, which
had spread to the new world. In addition to several herbs, the patient
was made to work in the heat all day long (in the sugar cane
plantations) , and then was kept in an elevated body temperature state
all night long as well. This was done either with steam or with hot
baths. I think you can see why the nobility was not so keen on it,
they'd rather risk a potentially poisonous quick cure, than lower
themselves to this type of work!
The herbs used in this treatment are now part of an experimental
protocol for Lymes disease, which was developed by my Herbal Teacher
(and Susan's), David Winston. The main cause of Lymes is a germ called
a spyrochete, this is the same type of critter that causes both Yaws
and Syphilis. Obviously, this is a different one, but seeing as these
herbs were used for both of the other diseases with relative success,
it is worth a try (especially for those who are post oral and IV
antibiotics, and still have Lymes). First, I must say that the first,
second, and third course of treatment for Lymes should always be
Antibiotics! !!! They work most of the time, esp
ecially when the
infection is caught early. It is best to have at least a month's worth
of antibiotics, this has shown the most effectiveness, and it is best
to catch it before it gets past 6 weeks.
I beleive the main ingredients in David's formula are Sasparilla root,
and Guaiacum Bark... these are the ones that originate in the old
treatment of Syphilis. In addition to these two he uses a whole host
of herbs for different purposes: some are used to actually kill the
spyrochete, some are used to mitigate symptoms, and some deal with the
damage that has resulted from the infection. He also has different
herbs he uses for acute phases and chronic cases of the disease (there
are usually cofactors of the infection, meaning that, especially in the
case of chronic lymes, it is not just a syrochete anymore, but could
also have a bacterial or other componen to the infection). He also
says that when dealing with lymes (or any other spyrochete infection)
the treatment should include at least 1 hour each day with elevated
body temperature, via sauna, bath, etc. This, he says, should not only
be done when undergoing the herbal protocol, but even when taking
antibiotics! !!
Anyway, in the case of peak oil, should no antibiotics still be
available, this would be what I would try. If you want to know more
about this protocol, I think David has recorded lectures on it, you
could check out the
herbalist and Alchemist website:

Paracelsus, I should say, was well known as a gifted physician for many
reasons. He introduced the use of minerals and metals into the medical
practice, which at the time was a godsend! He was sort of the Martin
Luther of medicine, throwing out the dogmatic Galenic interperatation
of the four humors medical theory, and using an early form of
scientific experimentation. He was also different because he didn't
discount the folk knowledge of herbs and other cures, which many
physicians of his time did. He was trained formally as a physician,
but didn't let that get in his way. As a result of his increadible
success, bombastic nature, and rebellious attitude, he was often run
out of town by other physicians. He was also known, however, only to
charge those who could afford it. He would treat the poor for free or
for very little cost. The rich and corrupt, however, he would charge
quite a bit (I am sure he got his payment out of that pope, for
instance!). Anyway, he was the one to develop the concept that the
dose of a substance is what makes it medicine or poison.
Well, I guess that's all!
Blessings
Jesse

I shall endeavor to ask about warts and gonorrea. I think those are the biggies.
Chlyamidia too, I reckon. I'll post more when I am able, or if someone answers..
If some one here wants an invite to my list, which studies meds and procedures like this, then come here and sign up, and I will approve you. Please mention you saw us on PeakOil. There's already some POiler's there.
We're endeavoring to preserve what our ancestors gave us, and also, to look towards the wisdom of the Green world and heal ourselves, if possible.
