Breaks faith? North of 49 has always been the mouse in the elephant's stall.
What did we expect? Fair play? We mistook our game for theirs.
sventvkg nailed it. Who was behind the NAFTA scheme to begin with? Reisman,GottleibCarney (wasn't she special?) and the rest of Muldoon's America craed creeps.
I doubt we'll realize we have far more in common with Central America,Cuba,Vietnam,Iraq and every other country screwed over by
Amerigun. Not so long as Bay Street and the middle class ethic rule here. Not so long as Minnesotan iron ore and Iowa grain are taxied about on the Prime Minister's ships.
Yeah,it's a slap in the face.I'm waiting now for the kick in the nuts.

I renamed it as requested. It was very difficult coming up with a title because of the wave of disgust that kept threatening to overwhelm me. 8O

I totally agree that the average person gets screwed by free trade agreements.

It certainly is good for big business as evidenced by the law suit against Canada Post for something like 184 million dollars becuase it has an unfair advantage having routes and post boxes at peoples homes by one of the big courier companies.

Unknown Element -

Well done you for the title.

Given growing PO awareness and US visibly craving the tar sands, I wonder how strong a reaction the Canadian electorate will demand of its Govt ?

The problem is that the tar sands are almost exclusively in Alberta's jurisdiction. They are our version of neo-cons. shameful actually. Even though they are reporting a 7 billion$ surplus they are more than willling to sell off any and everything they ahve to make moreprofit.

even if this means they are selling us down the river which none of them actually believes. Theya re in the cult of infinite gains I'm afraid. There is very little to do about it except... would you Americans be willing to exchange any of your blue states for them?

US trade with Canada now less than 2/3rds of total

http://money.canoe.ca/News/Economy/2009 ... 86-cp.html

Quite a drop in 5 yrs. time. This is for 2008 too, could be even less in 2009.
I wonder how much of this is due to the tighter border with all the Homeland Security rules and regulations?
The politicians will say not much but I'm not so sure.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')TTAWA - Canada's reliance on the United States as a trading partner fell even further in 2008 as American automobile and housing markets declined during the economic downturn.

Statistics Canada reports the United States accounted for less than two-thirds - 65.7 per cent - of Canada's total merchandise trade (exports and imports combined) in 2008.

That's down from 67.2 per cent in 2007 and 74 per cent in 2003.

The agency says exports to countries other than the United States have been growing for six years, representing 22.3 per cent of total exports in 2008, up from 14.3 per cent in 2003.

Leading the gain for Canada's exports from 2007 to 2008 were the Asia Pacific countries - mainly Japan - and Brazil.

Exports to Japan increased 20.2 per cent from 2007 to $11.1 billion, driven by coal, canola, and wheat, while exports to China totalled $10.4 billion in 2008, up 9.1 per cent.

Canada's exports to Brazil increased 70.7 per cent from 2007, led by potash, used as a fertilizer, as well as coal and newsprint.

snip....

It looks like the biggest increase in exports was in the commodities sector, not manufactured goods.

The United States is still Canada's largest trade partner and will be for the foreseeable future.

I doubt homeland security has had anything to do with the small shift in trade. Trade between the US and Canada has increased steadily since NAFTA. The reason the % with America has changed is that trade between Canada and X country have increased faster.
