$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Another US news casualty: Philadelphia Inquirer bankrupt Press Trust of India / Washington February 23, 2009, 13:15 IST:
Joining a group of more than half a dozen major US dailies, Philadelphia Inquirer has filed for bankruptcy.
With this, Philadelphia Inquirer has joined a long list of American newspapers who have either filed for bankruptcy or have taken steps to save the newspaper from collapse due to declining revenue at a time when the country is experiencing economic recession.
Last year the Tribune Co, which is the publisher of some of the prominent newspapers like The Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, and The Baltimore Sun had filed for bankruptcy. The Minneapolis Tribune the most popular newspaper in the twin city of Minnesota too has filed for bankruptcy.
The Journal Register Co, which publishes a number of local daily and weekly newspapers, filed for bankruptcy on Saturday. Further the New York Times Co suspended its dividend to cope with the economic downturn. It has lifted loans on its building in Manhattan too.
With sharp declining revenue, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Rocky Mountain News too are for sale and likely to close down if not being rescued.

I've generally heard two sides to this broad issue:

1. Newspapers are/were doing fine, many still making modest profits. The problem arises when they're purchased by a larger media corporation that demands much higher returns. Greed is killing newspapers, not the internet.

2. The internet is killing newspapers.

Think about it: where do we all get our news? Newspapers, television, radio and the Internet.
What would happen if we "lost" some or most of our sources.

Rupert Murdoch would happen, which is why media consolidation is one of the most important issues that nobody talks about.

But, how would one widely distribute information—especially if phone service is disrupted?
Rupert Murdoch would happen
I'm sorry, did you mean our post-crash news sources? Hmmm... I guess that depends on what infrastructure is still functioning. I think radio would be the most primitive means to reach thousands. After that? pony express, town crier, smoke signals? What are your thoughts, FL?

I love newspapers, and buy them whenever I travel to a town with a paper. However, Most papers in the US, including the NY Times, LA Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press, etc. have editorial policies that lean politically to the left, and their news coverage is sometimes biased to the point that the papers become thinly disguised propaganda organs for the left.

Why should anyone pay for propaganda when you can get it for free on the internet?

I think there are some newspapers that do lean left (New York Times) but only when compared to other MSM. I don't consider the NYT to be genuinely liberal any more than I consider Obama to be liberal.

I think what we call far left here in the states probably registers closer to the center on a global scale. Discussions like this are difficult because all of these terms have been hijacked by both sides for their own benefit.

The question is NOT which print newspapers will go bankrupt before 2010; rather, the question is which tiny handful will remain.
