$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TWilliam', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pops', 'W')hen it comes to writing a check for college I'd think an agreement it be repaid isn't unreasonable.

Personally I'd think long and hard about writing such a check in the first place.

It is my opinion, based on many years of observation and experience, that very few adults, and even fewer young adults, appreciate and therefore make considered use of things that are handed to them, with little or no effort on their part required to attain them. Most college students I've known who had their way paid by mummy and daddy saw the experience as little more than one long social occasion, while those who paid their own way actually tended to make use of the educational opportunity.

I experienced a middle ground. Mom and dad help with a large percentage of the tuition and room and board, I had to come up with books and the rest plus all the additional money I spent on anything from order out pizza to CD's. I did not have a first hand CD player until I got married. The two summers I rented an apartment I lost weight (~20 pounds) because most of my calories came from wasted food at a local buffet where I worked. The illegal dishwasher and I split it up.

At the time I still did not completely appreciate it, I do think I did well by the opportunity. The parents did do the heavy lifting and I did not resent them because the "deal" was laid out well beforehand. I was resentful for a time of those kids who came from the suburbs of Chicago who with the decked out dorm rooms and spending money... took me close to a decade to come to terms with that... but in retrospect it was a good way to go about the whole college thing. If I have the opportunity I will try to do the same for my children.

one of my kids graduated in May of last year with a double degree, international business and international finance. When he started (he had a lot of grants and scollarships) we each borrowed 20k. We've been paying it off since he started, we owe 400. and he now owes the full 20k. For all the work, his future prospects are not looking great....:(

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('wisconsin_cur', 'I') experienced a middle ground. etc. etc.

I would say cur that you likely represent one of those 'few' that I mentioned. It wouldn't surprise me if that particular group was rather well-represented overall on this forum, at least among active posters.

Not especially relevant perhaps, but you reminded me JJ of a statistic I remember reading somewhere that amongst self-made millionaires, most of those who had a college education ended up with lower net worth than those without one...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Quinny', 'M')y son's hoping to study Computer Science at London Imperial College. I don't want him to go to London as it's a fair distance (in UK terms) and I feel London will be worse than many other places WTSHTF.

Hopefully in a fast crash scenario we'd be able to get him home (wherever that might be).

Yeah if you've seen the *28 days/weeks" movies you'd know how terrible London will be when the zombie hordes come.

Nah, he didn't miss anything. Alex is just a one-trick-pony is all. One of those folks who doesn't comprehend the self-fulfilling character of fervently believed prediction, or that earlier peoples grasped the cyclical nature of all things, including human endeavor, and thus could predict likely courses of events. Alex (apparently) believes only Divine revelation holds that capability.

Incidentally speaking of Divine revelations, I wonder how many Believers are aware that the 'official' version of John's Apocalypse is abridged, and that the more complete version residing in Vatican archives indicates that John's vision continues beyond the destruction and declares that the Apocalype itself may be entirely avoided through the agency of human choice. And no, the 'choice' indicated is not the acceptance of Christ as personal savior...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('SeaGypsy', 'P')erhaps; in the end there will be a toilet paper factory owned by a cynical Sanskrit scholar?

Seriously!

Reverse Engineer: Your cousin is probably a genius who will see out her days on a nice Hare Krishna farm; eating vegies& cheese, popping out little Krishna loving babies with a vegetarian death squad defending the perimiter (chanting& burning insence all the while)?

What will the vegetarian death squad defend the perimiter with? Potato guns?

Cassandra in Greek mythology was cursed to make predictions that no one would believe...

You cannot help people who don't want to be helped.

Compassion is a nice thing in abstract, but when things get nasty, people will get nasty. Just read about the Siege of Jerusalem or the Battle of Stalingrad.

It is a curious concept that one should be morally obligated to help people who ignored the warnings and refused to prepare. I can already see the starving morons in the future whining about how "its not my fault" or "I didn't know this was going to happen."

The raindrop never accepts blame for the flood.

My food stockpile and permaculture system is geared towards supporting 6 people (family) on my homestead. After TSHTF and order breaks down, a 7th person trying to climb over my fence to steal corn or apples is going to be turned into a stain.

And it won't be out of hate. I will be out of necessity.
