Here's a gratuitous montage of our Maremma, done by my daughter:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WildRose', 'I') liked the story about your Newfoundland dog. You know, those dogs are very useful as search and rescue animals on the east coast. I have read some stories about them saving people in the water.
They were bred for that. Daschunds were bred to corner badgers. Australian Sheep Dogs were bred to manage sheep. We had one of those before we got the Newfie. That one's name was Dinkum. He liked me but bit my brother. Not hard or serious but enough to say "keep away!" Then he chased a little girl riding down the street on her bicycle. Nipped at her ankles. Must have thought she was a sheep. We had to give that dog to a rancher that my dad knew who lived out in the mountains. I was sad to see Dinkum go, but then we got Lucky. I heard that Dinkum adapted well to life on a ranch which is where he belonged anyway.

This is kind of a memorial to my first dog

She was the sweetest thing and a real presence in my and many other people's lives. I received almost a dozen cards when she died.

She grew up with a cat (my ex-wife's). The cat was cool too. Earned her keep by catching the mice.

The cat that I described that greeted me at night when I got home from work once caught a bird. He didn't eat it but put it on the front porch to say, "See! Look at what a great hunter I am!"

I had a cat that always shit in my garden. It also decimated the local shrew, mouse, rat and rabbit populations. I lost far far more crop after that cat was hit on the highway compared to what he damaged in the gardens.

I miss him almost every day.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'S')ometimes I go out walking after midnight. The Moon and stars call me. We've got these canyons here and the coyotes come up out of them to prey on house pets.

Yeah San Diego's a good place for that. Nice nighttime walking year round. I like walking at night too when the hectic world slumbers.

I was in Houston once. The temperature was sub-freezing. I grew up in San Diego and had no idea how harsh it can get. I went out for a walk and got fearful. It dawned on me that I could die in those conditions. I headed back to the hotel in a hurry. Damn that was cold! We don't get anything like that in San Diego.

I love night walks also.

PMS, can you imagine this? A couple of months ago, me and my new puppy, then just 3 months old, running in a blizzard, -25 degrees, my puppy jumping into snowbanks wherever she could. I think she's part Husky. You can get used to the cold. Still, I'm looking forward to spring!

Let's all get together and prowl around at night then. I love the night too!

I also like living where there are kind of severe seasons because you always look forward to the transition to the next. When it's 95 F and 80 percent humidity I really look forward to the Fall. A feeling that you might freeze to death is very scary. I was camping once alone on a plateau in the winter and wasn't prepared for the temp in the teens. Couldn't sleep all night because I was worried I would freeze. When I camp with my dog I never get worried - they are warm !

I had a similar experience camping in the winter once, except that I wasn't alone, there were eight of us altogether, four in the tent I was in. Snow fell overnight and we were not prepared for how cold it would be on the ground (we didn't have proper sleeping bags, just some comforters and summer bags). We ended up all cuddling together and putting a couple of the comforters between us and the ground but still couldn't get warm. We shivered all night and stayed awake! Silly kids!

I enjoy the different seasons as well. We have quite the range of temperatures and weather patterns in central Alberta. Fall and spring are my favorites, but I do like a lot of aspects of summer and winter, too. I find summer harder to walk with a dog than winter - you have to go very early in the morning or late at night. But that's where I learned to love the night walking.

You have to go to equator to get away from seasons. Winter nights in San Diego routinely drop to the low 50's, into the 40's and sometimes below freezing. Not exactly arctic but cold nonetheless. I really don't like cold. I've been out walking when a heat wave brought the temperatures up past 105. Didn't mind, I like the heat. But Summer nights around here are sublime. The sounds of the crickets, the mild breeze & starlights.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'W')inter nights in San Diego routinely drop to the low 50's, into the 40's and sometimes below freezing. Not exactly arctic but cold nonetheless.

The canyons in North County routinely dip down around freezing at night. We go on an hour's walk every evening, and there are the regular "cold pockets" as we call them at certain points on our route as we walk by one of the deeper canyons. Go up onto the ridges and it's quite comfortable again.

My girl is cold-sensitive but I'm not. I can be comfortable in a t-shirt down into pretty low temperatures, especially if I'm walking. My problem is the opposite - overheating during the summer. One reason I remain in love with the left coast is the low humidity, which helps.

Are you inland North County, coyote? Fallbrook can get very cold while directly west in San Onofre the temps are milder. I used to live in Lakeside where it often got very hot in the summer. Now I'm in Normal Heights, closer to the ocean and the temps are less extreme. I use the word 'extreme' advisedly. Nowhere in San Diego county do we get anything like, say, Houston. Yes, it does snow in the mountains and we do get those hot dry winds in Autumn from the east that can lead to terrible firestorms, but it's nothing compared to the drastic weather in Houston. I saw something incredible there once. Low black clouds to the horizon moving very fast north that went on for days. Astonishing. Led to enormous snow storms in Wyoming.

I love them all. Dogs, cats, fish, birds, turtles. One of my favorite pets, as a kid, was a little snapping turtle my brother and I caught. We fed him hamburger, and patted his head--He loved it. We eventually returned him to the wild, with a good head start, a carapace of about 3 inches long and two inches wide.

My next wild pet, if it's meant to be, will be a raven.

I was out of town during the chimp attack, so don't know details of that one yet. Thanks for reminding me to google it! If I do somehow find a baby raven, in need of care, I would make an effort to get it right back with it's flock asap, if that was at all possible. It would be an outdoor pet. Don't actually believe in keeping wild pets anymore.

I used to live in Lakeside where it often got very hot in the summer. Now I'm in Normal Heights, closer to the ocean and the temps are less extreme.

I've lived in Fallbrook in the past, didn't care for it much. Strange people, strange community. I'm along the coast at the moment but up in the hills - it's nice to be near the water and stay a bit cooler in the summer. Quite mild winter weather too for the most part, not much in the way of real cold but the canyons collect what there is and concentrate it there. You'd swear there was some misplaced frost demon down there some nights, the way the chill will suddenly pounce out and claw at you as you walk by one of the deeper ones. I'm quite cold resistant but those places can really make me feel it, and get me up the next hill in a hurry trying to warm up.

The water situation in Southern California is getting desperate. No real surprise there. I'm not going to be able to get out of San Diego area as quickly as I'd once hoped - things have intervened, as they have a way of doing, some happy, some not. I still hope to get out within a year or two. We'll see how things turn out.
