$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Jotapay', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Hermes', 'T')his appears to be a hoax. The person who made the video is probably messing with people.

Why is the smoked front face plate lightened (allowing light to pass through) right in front of the lens? I have several small camera lenses like that around my house. This one looks exactly the same. I can't tell what the 'microphone' is from the video, the resolution isn't good enough.

Thats for the remote - the "lens" is probably an infrared receiver for the remote...

I don't think so. This is an IR receiver, which looks exactly like what he points to as the IR receiver on the left side of the component:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'I')f you take apart your microwave you will also find a camera and a proctologists probe in there :? I kid you not.

i thought they use their finger to do the required probing.

raw data mining of digital data is easy, affordable, and not a new thing.

the time is in the analysis. my best guess is that the government employees involved use a methodology of capturing everything, but not looking at it, until there's a reason. for example, someone arouses enough attention to end up on a no-fly list, donates to a charity designated to be "one of the bad guys", etc.

Jotapay:

There's something I think you're missing here.

This guy in the video could very well open up his HDTV converter box, and show us real mini cameras and microphones. I'm not disputing that, and I don't think many people at the link I referenced debated that.

HOWEVER if this guy goes to Radio Shack, buys a mini camera lens and mini microphone, comes back home and opens up his HDTV converter box, crams them in there, solders them to some random spot, closes up the box ...

... and then videos himself opening up the thing and showing us how there is a camera and a microphone in it...

then what?

Never mind that the converter boxes have no way of sending information out or otherwise recording it. Mine is connected to a deep fringe antenna via a one way noise limiter/booster amp.

That "camera" actually looks like one of those mini piezoelectric speakers.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Jotapay', 'C')an you take a pic? This one is a Magnavox. The Magnavox lens definitely looks like a camera. I'm going to take my Scientific American apart, I think. It's an actual DVR.

That "camera" looks to be hot-glued onto a transformer, which would be about the worst place you could put a camera.
You can see some of the analogous parts in this pic of our unit: http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL83/536 ... 289450.jpg

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Jotapay', 'S')econd pic. See clear circle in plastic fascia in front of camera.

If you look again to see where that clear circle is, it appears to line up with the IR receiver. If it were for the "camera", it would be much farther over to the right.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Jotapay', 'I')'ve heard that the Scientific Atlantic HDTV receivers that Time Warner cable uses have cameras and/or microphones in them. I've always meant to take mine apart and look.

Well, this guy took apart a Magnavox digital TV converter box that everyone who has an old analog television is going to need to watch the new HD-only TV signal when all TV broadcasts convert to digital high-definition in a few months. The box has a camera and microphone right up front there, as you can see.

Tyler_JC, is this another instance (re: the Facebook datamining) where you don't care about how the corporations/government spy on your everyday life in your own home?

You guys are missing the big picture, these units are receivers NOT transmitters. Even if they were installing cameras and mics, how do they get that information back to the facist dictators? It is relatively easy to pick up a signal using basic electronics, but a whole nuther ball game to transmit.

1) Where are they transmitting to? A satellite? Don't think so!! Land based receiver? Maybe but the range would be very limited going by the size of the box.

2) Imagine the tetrabytes of information they would receive from each box, and how do they screen it all for useful information? All the would get out of mine is me scracthing my balls every twenty mins.

Come on guys I love a good conspiracy theory but this one sucks.

The news outlet that posted the original YouTube video went and bought one of the receivers to check it out for themselves. They found nothing, it was a fake.

I'VE BEEN HAD.
