Two nuclear subs crash Into each other

First satellites, now this, nothing is working properly these days...
British and French submarines In deep underwater collision
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')RITISH and French nuclear submarines which collided deep under the Atlantic could have sunk or released deadly radioactivity, it emerged last night.

The Royal Navy’s HMS Vanguard and the French Navy’s Le Triomphant are both nuclear powered and were carrying nuke missiles.

Between them they had around 250 sailors on board.

A senior Navy source said: “The potential consequences are unthinkable. It’s very unlikely there would have been a nuclear explosion.

“But a radioactive leak was a possibility. Worse, we could have lost the crew and warheads. That would have been a national disaster.”

U.K. will not speak on operations but says nuclear safety not compromised 15 Feb 2009:
LONDON - British and French nuclear submarines collided in the Atlantic earlier this month, a U.K. newspaper reported Monday. …
France's Defense Ministry said on Feb. 6 that its nuclear submarine Le Triomphant had struck "a submerged object" while returning from a patrol, damaging the sonar dome on the front of the submarine. The ministry statement said the object was probably a container. …

They are two SSBN's. There job is not to stalk each other, that is the job of SSN's. There function is to find a deep dark lonely bit of the ocean and stay there as quiet and undetected as possible. Under no circumstances would these ships ever be expected to follow another boat.

These are the capital ships of two very close allies who happened to be in the same spot of water at the same time. Whatever brought them into such close physical space was no accident. I would find it increadibly unlikely that they were in the same vicinity other than as a joint excersize. What the nature of that excersize is has me somewhat baffled but this nothing like the US\USSR incidents of the cold war.

Perhaps somebody at NATO HQ accidentally sent out the same orders to both these Subs?

I would say that this thread definitively answers the title of the satellite thread.

What's Dumber Than Two Satellites Colliding?

this.
