$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]French, U.K. Nuclear Submarines Collide in Atlantic

By Gregory Viscusi

Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- French and British nuclear-missile submarines collided earlier this month while on routine patrol in the Atlantic, the countries’ militaries said.

... skip ...

“This is a nuclear nightmare of the highest order,” Kate Hudson, chairwoman of the London-based Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said in statement on the group’s Web Site.

“The collision of two submarines, both with nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons on board, could have released vast amounts of radiation and scattered scores of nuclear warheads across the seabed,” Hudson said. U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown should “seize this opportunity to end continuous patrols,” she added.

... snip ...

I think that the increase in high-complexity screw-ups is a side-effect of having less money and manpower to maintain technology.

I thought the idea behind the submarine was to stay -hidden- from potential adversaries. Not that the UK and France are adversaries at the moment.

Oh come on, submarines have been playing hide and seek with surface ships since they were invented 100 years ago, and they have been playing blind man's bluff with each other since the 1950's. It is NOT unheard of for them to bump one another while doing it either. There have been at least half a dozen incidents since the 1950's that have gotten public release and nobody knows how many that were never exposed. The submarine being followed most likely made a radical turn (called a Crazy Ivan because the USSR invented it) to check and see if someone was behind it. If the follower is too close when that happens they bump, which is why prudent commanders follow at a somewhat safer distance. It becomes a kind of game, to see how close you can get without getting detected, and sometimes you get too close and 'brush' or worse collide.

I would also say quoting someone from a radical anti-nuclear group will give you a reliably anti-nuclear position so why anyone would beleive it is accurate is beyond my understanding.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Alfred Tennyson', 'W')e are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
