Modern agriculture==petroleum. Or soil is a mechanism to convert petroleum to food. The Green Revolution----hybridized seeds, irrigation, mechanization, cultivation and weed control, fertilizer and biocides, on-farm processing, preservatives, refrigeration, timely shipment and distribution----is a simple function of inexpensive and unfailingly available petroleum.

Do we believe in peak oil? (Say yes) Good :)
That means we believe in peak food

Yes, the same idiotic conversation! It didn’t happen 40 years ago, so that is proof that it is not going to happen today! Isn’t this circular logic without the use of neural path ways; sort of like the same logic used by the dinasours just before a mother big snowball blasted out a 100 billion cubic meters of the Yucatan Peninsula.

We will probably never know why most people can not understand that once a complex system becomes unstable, it is likely to start behaving chaotically, and that all complex systems eventually become unstable. Genetic predisposition, failure in early childhood development, nutrient deficiencies, lead paint - we may never understand what has shut their brains down.

But, I do appreciate your diligence in addressing these consist displays of cephalic collapse. You know - the cessation of higher brain functions in rudimentary primates. But how do you handle this constant exhibition of de-evolution?

Do you think when TSHTF that most people will simply devolve to blubbering idiots over night?

Yes, I agree - this idiotic conversation again. As if we needed petroleum to make our cars, trains and trucks go  Not that we're going to be running out of petroleum any time soon.

By this truly bizarre line of reasoning, it would stand that once an economy went into a recession, it would never recover. Never mind the fact that after every recession, the economy has recovered.

By this bizarre line of reasoning, it would stand that once the dinosaurs were wiped out - and after every mass extinction for that matter - life on earth would never have been able to recover. But feel free to ignore the inconvenient fact that every mass extinction event was followed by a rebirth of new life forms on the planet.

God you are deluded.

No dumbass, his point wasn't that new lifeforms would come into existence. His point is that we are causing our own extinction!

Oily what does this have to to with global food supplies?

You're the one who asked for a car not powered by petroleum. I just responded to your post.

What's wrong, does it bother you that Farmer Joe's combine can be powered by natural gas, and thus we're not doomed?

Sorry to disappoint pstarr, but trips to Saturn to harvest methane clouds are unnecessary. In case you haven't been paying attention, we've got this, not to mention this and this and the rest of these.

Hows the 300 billion barrels you were squeeling about being in the Bakken working out? Oh and how about that couple of hundred billion barrels in Western Iraq you were pumping not so long ago. I mean which fool is thick enough to believe a Chalabai?

That 300 billion barrels is still there. So is the stuff in Iraq (it was not just Chalabai making that claim, in case you missed). It's all still there, just waiting for us to pump it out.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Leutnant', 'h')mm...it seems global wheat supply is about the same now as it was in 1998.
That's a worry considering there's an extra billion mouths to feed now.

The real story is not the increase in human numbers but the huge surge in the amount of food being consumed by people. We are now burning it in cars as a fuel and more and more people are eating it as beef and lamb consuming far more acerage than when they were eating it as corn and rice.

The danger is not so much a sudden huge famine, but years of deteriorating nutrition levels slowly gnawing away at peoples health. The numbers will not suddenly show up as a mass number of dead from hunger but the slow rise in infant mortality, the steady increase in elderly deaths and the dropping of productivity of workers. Famines are often years and decades in the making. A steady build up of pressure on a population that breaks into war and civil violence.

We are on a malthusian treadmill that gets that little bit quicker every year.
