That stuff is absolutely crazy! Those world islands look extremely cool, I wonder what they'll build on the little individual pieces of the land, if anything?

Well, the plan was for McMansions and condos on those islands. If TSHTF, my understanding is that those islands would eventually dissolve into the sea if they aren't maintained.

Gotta love this quote:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')There have been some horror stories," says one expat. "One banker moved out here with his family after selling up in London only to be sacked after four weeks. He was traumatised."

Traumatized? Come on, a little Prozac should solve this Bankster's problems in no time. LOL. How long before the DSM IV identifies a new Psychological malady, "Post Traumatic Banking Collapse Disorder"?

Please be advised: PTBCD afflicts primarily affluent white male western Pigmen, and results in suicide if not promptly treated with Electroshock Therapy, Castration and Lobotomy. Please refer anyone with the early Symptoms of PTBCD to a qualified Psychiatrist for help. Symptoms can include but are not limited to: Frozen Hedge Funds, repossessed Bentleys, Trophy Wife abandonment and midnight calls to Helicopter Ben for a TARP Bailout. Have compassion for the suffering here, and get these Pigmen under the care of a qualified PTBCD medical professional as soon as possible.

Modern Medicine can save these Pigmen. Suicide is not the only option.

So many cars are being abandoned at the airport in Dubai that signs have gone up asking that the keys be left in the ignition. Reports are that a 1000 or more cars are being abandoned per month.

Shamelessly copied from other people's blogs
================================

Airport police in Dubai have found some 3,000 abandoned automobiles during the past 4 months, as Indian and other South Asians in the real estate industry lost their jobs and fled the country. They appear to have suddenly found themselves unable to afford their monthly payments on the car loan ("equated monthly installment") and knew the car would be repossessed anyway. A lot of the former owners appear to have been fleeing in such panic because they were deeply in debt at that time they lost their positions.

Mumbai resident D Nair (Not His Real Name) had been living in a plush highrise in Sharjah for the past four years. However, the script went horribly wrong when his contract was terminated. Nair used all his credit cards to their maximum limit, shopping for people back home. He then discarded his Honda Accord before returning to India for good. Nair, who stays in a rented apartment in Navi Mumbai today, has a Rs15 lakh loan with a Dubai bank.

Another such victim of the meltdown said he bid goodbye to his car in a small bylane near the airport and hailed a cab. "I was scared because a number of us were doing the same and did not want to be questioned by the police. There was no way I could afford to pay the EMI of 1100 Dhirams for my Ford Focus," he told DNA on condition of anonymity.

Dubai's dreams are gone, look at those empty buildings, failed plans, many companies closed, who is going to occupy those islands now? Tourism can save the country? Americans can not travel anymore worrying too much about their awful situation, failed business, foreclosures, bankuptcies and other countries have no money either. I'm sorry for the losses, but is too late to do something.

Maybe in a smaller scale things could work but with those huge white elephants that now can't be sold? Erosion is an huge problem, who is going to fix the problems later?? I saw a guy with an ad in his Porshe trying to find another job after being fired from his company, maybe he will back in UK soon..another country in recession..

I predict PEAK ABANDON CARS in dubai !!!

Wow, abandoning cars, pretty amazing turnaround for this place.
I was there about 3 yrs. ago when everything was full speed ahead so it's sobering to read about this development.

Because they owe more on them than they're worth.

Howcome none of them was crook enough to sell the car and leave the country? I don't think banks in Dubai can find these people in India or Pakistan.

From what I've read, much of the Dubai skyline is essentially fake. The lower floors are occupied, but the upper floors are a hollow shell.

I think I said earlier in this thread that their foreign worker slave labor practices are atrocious. But having said that, and yes even if they are empty, some of these buildings are really bold and gorgeous.

I wish we Americans would do something that architecturally dramatic.

Laid-Off Foreigners Flee as Dubai Spirals Down
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')UBAI, United Arab Emirates — Sofia, a 34-year-old Frenchwoman, moved here a year ago to take a job in advertising, so confident about Dubai’s fast-growing economy that she bought an apartment for almost $300,000 with a 15-year mortgage.
Now, like many of the foreign workers who make up 90 percent of the population here, she has been laid off and faces the prospect of being forced to leave this Persian Gulf city — or worse.

“I’m really scared of what could happen, because I bought property here,” said Sofia, who asked that her last name be withheld because she is still hunting for a new job. “If I can’t pay it off, I was told I could end up in debtors’ prison.”
With Dubai’s economy in free fall, newspapers have reported that more than 3,000 cars sit abandoned in the parking lot at the Dubai Airport, left by fleeing, debt-ridden foreigners (who could in fact be imprisoned if they failed to pay their bills). Some are said to have maxed-out credit cards inside and notes of apology taped to the windshield.

The government says the real number is much lower. But the stories contain at least a grain of truth: jobless people here lose their work visas and then must leave the country within a month. That in turn reduces spending, creates housing vacancies and lowers real estate prices, in a downward spiral that has left parts of Dubai — once hailed as the economic superpower of the Middle East — looking like a ghost town.

That's pretty screwed up. Maybe we can have a wailing wall here in the US where people can drop off their credit card bills, unpaid, with a note attached
After fueling up their cars, Twyman says they bowed their heads and asked God for cheaper gas. There was no immediate answer, but he says other motorists joined in and the service station owner didn't run them off.
