misuse of the word "loose"

Postby Falconoffury » Sat 31 Jan 2009, 01:10:44

Is it just me, or has there been a rash recently of people misusing the word "loose" all over the internet? People use that word often when the correct word is "lose". I can't remember the last time I saw "loose" used correctly in context.

Now, if you will excuse me, my pants are on loose, and they just fell down. I need to put on my belt. :)

"Loose", instead of "lose", is one of the most irritatingly misspelled words anywhere. And it doesn't seem to matter whether the written matter is high or low-brow. I even see it in published articles that should have been spell-checked. To me, it stands out like a big, glaring annoyance - like a speed-bump.

Same thing with "definately". It's DEFINITELY!! Goddammit!

"De" is the old Latinate operational intensifier modifying "finite"! The original Latin word was "definir", from "de" (completely) and finir (to bound or limit). There is no such word as "finate".

Got it!?

Loosely speaking, I lose my mind when I see the word loose exchanged for the word lose. It unloosens my hinges, leaving me lost.

Sure, it's annoying. But what about 'then' and 'than'?

I was starting to think I was the only one that was getting sick of that little trend. It's even more irritating than the people who spell definitely as "definately".

Your loosing it. Better to relax then get all worked up over it.

Actually there's to, too, and two. Which I find rather frequently on this board. But not to be out done by there, they're and their. But then most of it is a crap shoot anyhoo.

Half of the posters on the Internet appear to be semi-literate. Best thing is to bite down one's instinct to correct and get on with it. Life is too short, and I'm not your teacher.

My personal bugbears are 'Your' for 'You're' and 'there' for 'their'

I blame the lazy parents and Microsoft. Kids writing should be always be checked for grammar and spelling by a literate adult, not a computer. The use of spell checkers which do not have the intelligence to understand context should be banned until puberty.

Now you have me confused!! If you unloosen your hinges that would imply that you tightend them correct? To loosen them would be to turn the screws out so to unloosen them would be to turn them back in again.

I remember a time at work where the placement and correct reading of a comma in a specification made a $1000 difference in what was owed to a contractor.:)

Microsoft word automatically asks to put a comma in after the word which. Which if used wrong (like in a compound sentence) where you have a main clause and a subordinate clause, makes the sub clause refer back to the predicate.

This happened recently in a letter from my childs principal (of all people) who was sending out a permission form. The misplaced comma in essense made the letter about asking for legal permission to teach my kid how to use drugs, narcotics and intoxicating inhalants instead of preventing them from the use of the afore mentioned. He didn't get it. Commas are powerful things.

When I mentioned it to him and the cop running the program, they insisted that I was wrong (mostly because no one else had ever pointed that out) and when I explained the grammar behind it insisted that that was not their intention. I, of course, pointed out that might be a hard case to make in a town where there was a marijuana shop operating in daylight right in the downtown area that the cops were tolerating.

they just don't have a sense of humour. (see its not just on here that I'm a pain in the ass )
