Best of 2008: Best Thread

Unread postby wisconsin_cur » Sat 03 Jan 2009, 09:53:46

OK guys. Same rules as last year. Use this thread to make nominations for "Best Thread". This category is for a thread. Please feel free to second, third, etc, other people's nominations. After 10 days (i.e. on January 13), I will close nominations and make the top nominated posters into a front page poll so people can vote. The poll will run another 10 days and on January 23, we'll announce the winner.

Last year's winner in this category was the Housing Meltdown Thread.

Good Luck everyone

My vote goes to: Runaway Global Warming has arrived

I second the Stock Market news.

I think the activity we saw back in the fall takes center stage for 2008.

We saw:
-the VIX (fear index) reach stratospheric heights. It rarely rises above 45, but in October I don't think it went below 45

-the evaporation of the big evil investment banks

-the GM and Ford auto collapse to penny-stock status

-how easy a crook "made off" with billions in life savings

-the helicopter guy do his trillion dollar magic trick

...on it went

Today I made/bought/learnt ...

http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic37476.html - part 2, split off in March
http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic48540-0.html - part 3, split off in November

(part of part 1 was in 2008 as well)

The first thing I do when I come here is look for this thread to see what everyone is up to. :)

My nomination is This One by Dohboi, he has started a lot of great threads on this group, he is humble, never seeks to put himself in front of any issue and he asks intelligent questions when he doesn't know all the facts on an issue. That thread, The Great Siberian Methane Melt is off and running, might be the second most significant issue that hits Humanity along side Peak Oil itself.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Alfred Tennyson', 'W')e are not now that strength which in old days

One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

I nominate Heinekin's Doom-O-Meter thread.

I like the name, and the contents remind us that no matter how bad things are, they can always get worse ! :)

I'm gonna say Pup's The 2008 PO.com Oil Price Challenge.

Just because it gave a little insight to the thinking of the members - and showed most of us pretty crappy at predictions, especially about the future.

I'll vote for that. There are a lot of raw emotions in that surface in that thread. I also see a lot of posters offering many a kind reasuring word to others.

That's a good thing.

That's true too. Seems like many of Heinekin's threads have that characteristic.

Nominations are complete. Vote for your favorite in the poll. It will run for one week and then we'll announce a winner.
