Lucky lottery ticket?

Unread postby midnight-gamer » Sun 04 Jan 2009, 09:49:36

Most of us have moments of dumb luck, but not as spectacular as this news clip. A retired factory worker bought his wife a winning Powerball ticket, but did not live to see their good fortune.

$10M for widow

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Powerball is no sure bet for Florida Dan Tracy, Sentinel Staff Writer Orlando Sentinel 4 Jan 2009:

The Florida Lottery is flat-lining, and so are contributions to its main beneficiary, education.

Faced with a bleak economy and gambling products that aren't selling the way they used to, lottery officials are trying to reverse their fortunes by offering Powerball, a multistate game of chance with jackpots that can reach hundreds of millions of dollars.

Baker's forecast for the lottery is a second consecutive drop in annual revenue for 2008, with money going to the state for education declining by $35 million, to about $1.24 billion. ... snip ...

Florida is not in good economic shape, I'll agree with that.

My own state, NH, has been able to maintain infrastructure cost thus far, 2009-2010 may see a breaking point, other states already look broken.

By Adam Leech aleech (von) seacoastonline.com Jan 04, 2009 6:00 AM EST:
PORTSMOUTH — At least two bills aimed at expanding gambling in the state will come before the House and Senate in the upcoming legislative session. And while past efforts have come up short on support, the significant budget shortfall facing the state could cause a change of heart in some lawmakers.

There is agreement among local legislators that building a casino in the North Country — which will be the focus of at least one bill — is not in the best interest of the state. However, the legislators vary widely on whether slot machines should be allowed at state racetracks in an effort to try and make up the projected $75 million to $90 million budget shortfall.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Residents feel the pinch as unemployment rises

NASHUA – In the 16 years Dan Duncanson has owned Technical Employment Services, he hasn't seen anything like this.

The number of applicants for employment has been building slowly and steadily over the past few months, tripling to nine or 10 a day, Duncanson said.

... skip ...

Employment agencies like TES were busy eight years ago as many electronic companies downsized after the dot-com boom, Duncanson said. But he said this time is different.

The number of people looking for work is greater, and although the majority of people Duncanson sees are unskilled laborers, the range of jobs sought and industries impacted is much broader, he said.

Theresa Stanberry, 32, said she was one of eight or nine people fired the week before Christmas from Courville Communities, a nursing care home in Nashua. Stanberry said she and others were let go because they had forgotten to consistently punch their time cards.

Two days after losing her job, she stood shivering outside the New Hampshire Employment Security office on Townsend West Street, where she had gone to file an unemployment claim.

"I'm a single mother with five kids. I did nothing but cry yesterday," the Nashua resident said. Her children range in age from 4 to 12, she said.

To make matters worse, her father had just lost his job, too.

Memories of region's 'lost' ski areas are kept alive on the Internet

Davis, 30, a skier for most of his life, has studied skiing history for more than 10 years. He recalls a trip to New Hampshire in which he found himself fascinated with ski areas that had closed, such as Mt. Whittier in West Ossipee, one of the larger areas to go out of business, and Tyrol Ski Area, in Jackson. He wanted to know more about them, but nothing like the Lost Ski Areas Project existed.

$18M for seashell complex

HAMPTON — The Hampton Beach Commission tried to convince state officials last week to change their position and recommend full funding for an $18 million redevelopment project at Hampton Beach.

... skip ...

The proposed project calls for constructing a new Hampton Seashell complex, including a stage, a Marine memorial bathhouse, Haverhill Street bathhouse and visitors center at the state park.

In July 2006, state officials removed both wings of the Seashell Stage after the concrete roof of the right side wing began to collapse from underneath.

Studies indicate for every dollar the state invests in tourism, it sees a $7-return on investment, Nyhan said.

I think they need to update their studies.

The palm leaf fans, the old Casablanca charm, the collectables and eclectic chachki are still in place. The food's the same; the drinks still flowing. But something's not quite right at Nashua's Black Orchid Grille.

"People seem to be making going out to eat more of an event than something they do regularly . . . With the economy and the stock market, people are scared," said Joey Zontini, general manager of Black Orchid Grille at 8 Temple St. "We're definitely seeing less business during the week, but our weekend business usually picks up."

Amid a deepening recession that has spawned layoffs, wage freezes and a general sense of fear, restaurants and other leisure industries are feeling the squeeze of consumers' belt-tightening.

Zontini said even regular customers are coming in less often.

"The main thing we're seeing is our regulars who used to come out twice a week are coming out once a week. The people who used to go out twice a month, are only going out once. And I know there's been layoffs recently, so we're not seeing them at all," he said.

While overall, food service jobs have grown statewide since last year, the service and drink industry cut 1,300 between October and November alone. Full-service restaurants cut 700 jobs and limited service food places cut 100 jobs, according to the New Hampshire Economic and Labor Market Bureau.

Each state needs to be pumping out educated and motivated children. Regionally, there should be production of something of trade value. Simply relying on tourism, in the face of a depression may not work too good.
