RALEIGH, N.C. -- With gas prices spiking recently, commuters aren't the only ones feeling the crunch.

As prices top out at over $2 a gallon, it costs around 90 bucks to fill up an ambulance.

Many government agencies are finding their fuel budgets are almost running on empty.

The Raleigh fire department's burning through its budget. It costs nearly $5,000 to fill up the fleet.

They can't replace their fleets. They could replace end-of-life vehicles with efficient ones but for the most part they are stuck in the previous investment trap.

The government's fuel budget is running on empty? Who's isn't??

I would think ambulance service is one of the least sensitive to gasoline
prices. What's an extra 50 cents compared to $100-$250?

Or there just parking the squad cars, tilting the seat back and leaving there sunglasses on so that people don't realize what there really doing is sleeping.

Fire trucks, ambulances, police cars...

Makes you consider where you want to live.

I actually checked this out before I moved. I am within 1/4 mile of the closest fire station. I am within 1 mile of an emergency care facility.
1/4 to my son's elementary school.

Things to think of for your home.

Actually, this highlights what could be a top opportunity to bring the issue to the fore of government / public debate.

Does anyone know anybody in the emergency services?

I know an ambulance driver, I could maybe convince him to put it to his colleages and their union.

They could then in turn question the authorities about the long-term ability to keep the fleet running.

It always amazes me here in So. California, whenever some old codger (somebody over 70, I'm 53) catches a heart attack they send a big honking pumper truck that maybe gets 5 mpg max with the EMT riding it!!

I've seen as many as 3 pumper trucks go to the location of a reported heart attack (I know, I asked).

Not to be factious but I hope they just let me pass on if this happens to me and save the fuel for living who'll need it. And I get the bonus of not having to face peak oil!

They will cut back on the service sector first. Here is what I will see.

First cutbacks... Ambulances except for "real" emergencies without sending any fire apparatus.

Second cutbacks.. Fire services except for bare essentials to keep towns from burning down. I.E. no rescuing cats out of trees.

Last to go will be police. TPTB always want to control the masses. Police will be sent for major crimes only. Traffic tickets, seat belt enforcement will be non-existent. Looting, rioting, murder will still be covered but with a slower response time. Use of deadly force will increase!

My two cents. :)
