Begging everyone to read this book

Unread postby Ludi » Wed 24 Dec 2008, 18:35:20

Yes, I'm asking everyone again, to please read this book:
"Permaculture: a designers' manual" by Bill Mollison.

It will answer many questions about how to transition to a society which works with natural processes ("sustainable," if you don't mind that word).

Is it the Bible? No. But it is useful and helpful.

This is the most helpful thing I can ever post on this messageboard.

Thanks Ludi - I have that book but have never read it from cover to cover. But I will be doing, and I thank you for the reminder.

Wishing you Season's Greetings!

Thanks for the suggestion, Ludi. I will see if I can pick one up on Friday. :)

I've had my copy for several years and learned much from it. It is a little thin when it comes to working in more temperate zones. It carries a lot of information value for the money, I'll admit, even though it's a +$100 book.

I agree, which is a main criticism of it. But there are other permie books which cover temperate regions.

Yea I know, I have one other one called "The Earth Care Manual" by Whitefield. I have a lot of respect for Mollison and his vast depth of knowledge and I guess I'm just disappointed that he didn't spend more time up in this part of the world.

I think it is important to note that a lot of the techniques deal with a lack of water which is only a mild problem in my area whereas it can be a real show stopper in more arid parts of the world. Maybe he felt that should be his focus. One of the few people on earth I'd like to take to lunch though. Or attend a workshop he put on.

Since you said "please", I'll think about it. It's still sitting on my Amazon wish list since June.

Wait. Now it is. It's 34% off there if you need to buy it. But if you can, borrow it from someone or the library. Buying books is not very sustainable.

Buying books is one of the cases where I'd make an exception and say it's ok. Nothing like wanting to look something up and having on a shelf in the office instead of a trip to the library. Unless, of course, you only need to read a book once to retain it all. :)

I think maybe permaculture is going to require a lot of ammo. South of us is San Antonio, population 1,300,000. East of us is Austin, population 700,000. An hour north of us is the largest military base in the world. I'm wondering if all those people are going to sit still and die properly when the food runs out.

Funny you should say that, mine too!

Anyway, thanks for the timely reminder, Ludi. I will.

Digitize it. Although I'm not sure the mercury in your computers would agree that it's environmentally safe...

Or just take notes from the borrowed book.

I especially recommend this book because so often we see folks here on po.com saying things like "Nobody has any solutions!" "Nobody has a plan!" Mollison presents a "powerdown" plan for the home scale all the way up to the world scale. Doesn't mean it has to be "The" Plan, but it certainly is "A" Plan, and can be implemented starting immediately.

I honestly wish more of the text were available free on the internet, but I understand Mollison wanting to make a living. He gave up his farm, as far as I know (he's about 80 years old I believe), so his book sales and his speaking engagements are probably his only income. In any case, much of it can probably be shared as "fair use," such as lists of the primary ethics, etc. Copying big chunks from the book and posting them would obviously violate copyright, though.

Not sure what you mean here. I think that buying books is VERY important. I buy two every month, and read one, with the goal of creating a strong reference library for myself and my family.

Once we eventually move out to the country, such information will be indispensible. Moreso for the day that we aren't able to access the internet or peakoil.com

You can probably get the book on interlibrary loan, though I personally recommend buying it if you actually want to implement the concepts in your own life.

But if in doubt, borrow it first, because it is quite expensive.

So, can anyone tell me if "The Earth Care Manual" is as good a book (given I live in a temperate climate and it's half the price)?
