My Kids Want To hear it from you.

I have been telling my kids (teens) about peak oil and the outcome from such an event. Although they listen and try to understand, they ask to here from other posters on this site. So i thought It might be a good thing to have a thread for messages for teens to read to support the parents.

KEEP IT CLEAN PLEASE....I want the kids to be able to read it....
Please don't candy coat it be honest.

O and mods if this is the wrong forum index please move.
And I will wait about 15 days to let everyone respond and to get past holidays.

You are posting this in P&CC most adults don't like to deal with this issue and the ramifications. You sure you want your kids to read the no holds barred truth of the matter. It can be depressing to say the least for some.

Actually YES I dont feel it does them any good to be coddled. But yes tone it down a little to be rated PG 17 or so. I don't want them to get the crap scared out of them and yet convey the truth.

Actually I think this needs to be moved to Psyco. So if a Mod will move it I would be grateful.

I have to admit...this may not be the best topic for kids...but it's your call & since you've asked...

Yo kidOs...

Read the front page of LIFEAFTERTHEOILCRASH.NET if you really want a scare.

Now, imagine every time you drilled a hole in the ground you hit a pocket of 1 or 2 gallons of oil...yet there are 6 places on the whole planet where an olympic sized swimming pool of oil was discovered.

Well, we have been draining those 6 olympic sized swimming pools for 60+ years now & they are fading fast...and all the 1-2 gallon pockets are not going to make up for the decline of the giant oil fields. So there is less oil to go around.

But the funny thing about oil is that it affects the price of EVERYTHING! Why you ask? Because we use oil for EVERYTHING! The bread & apples in your fridge wouldn't be there without oil...Water wouldn't flow from your faucet without oil. All plastics are made from oil.

Now beg & beg & beg mommy for all those plastic trinkets for X-mas & go to sleep knowing that santa will deliver as promised :)

Well anyway I do think a forum thread for kids is a good idea to support the parents. Teens are great at not taking parents seriously. I will give this much more thought and try to repost later on PSYCO forum and would really like some serious input from everyone. p.m. me with suggestions and comments.

My kids are age 40 and 42 now, but when they were 10 and 12, I told them that oil supply was limited, but would last a while yet. I expected to see problems from this in the future, so, for their own good, consider this in what you d with your life.

I reccomended that they choose a field of work that produces a TANGIBLE product, not just paper pushing, nor lower level service fields. Hard goods will always be needed. I think that hands-on skills will be a better bet than esoteric knowledge, in the future.

Look into alternative energy and educate yourself. Avoid the high-tech pie-in-the-sky stuff, like hydrogen powered cars, and concentrate on what individuals can do for their own benefit, such as solar space heating, and solar PV.

As we get further into the future, we will have more people and less resources to support them. This has happened before, such as in Europe (Great Britain had run out of big trees for shipbuilding, among other problems then) before North America was colonized, but now there are no more new places to go for resources. We have to live within our income. This is problem for everyone, but those who are aware and understand what's going on will be able to make better decisions.

Throughout the history of humankind, land ownership has been the basis of real wealth, and I don't see that changing. Owning the means to feed yourself, and knowing how to do so, is going to be a big factor of personal security.

It's all about basics: Food, Energy, Shelter, Water, and a means of productivity. Make your own choices, but be sure you are informed when you make them.

When I started prepping two years ago, my wife and daughter of 15 yrs old thought I was a bit out there. I took it slow and gradually brought them on-board with the idea that I wasn't quite ready for the nervous hospital.

What I told my daughter about 6 months ago was that it is likely that the life we enjoy now is about as good as its ever going to get. We both laughed about it for a bit and I don't try to depress her. On her own, she asked if she could have her own garden this year. I told her if you dig up the clay and help shovel manure into to it to amend it. We had a nice day getting filthy and had some good times talking doing it. Currently she is looking at seed catalogs to figure our what to plant in her garden.

Teenagers hate admitting that their parents are right about anything but if you talk to them reasonably, the wheels do turn in their head and they "get it". Just takes time and some patience.

Have your kids watched "Crude Awakening"? If not check it out from your local library.

Try my Idiot's Guide to Modern Peak Oil. It's the simplest explanation I have come up with so far.

I had this long thing written out, but honestly, is this what you want them to read on Christmas Eve? It might be better to wait until after the holidays. :(

Watch the Crash Course online with them.

Children....if your parents are psychologically damaged enough to buy into peak oil = end of the world, go live with your grandparents in case its contagious. :-D

Otherwise , read 2 books for starters, "The Prize" by Yergin if only to be informed enough of the history involved, and then Duncan Clarke's "The Battle For Barrels", it should teach you enough to figure out where peakers have come off the rails.

Without peak oil, but with population going the way it has been, they could look forward to a life in a little apartment with wall-to-wall T.V. and a joystick for kicks.

Tell them to be survivors and not to follow the herd.
