Psychology has some answers to what we are observing. A good place to start is to read Lobaczewski though his book is not for the layman IMO and is written in a convoluted language. I just started.

Well well, I just surprised myself as I see a familiar name that Dr. Lobaczewski mentions in his quote that is found in the above link
