Russian police end demonstration (before it starts)

Unread postby wisconsin_cur » Mon 15 Dec 2008, 02:18:56

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')OSCOW – Police thwarted a banned anti-Kremlin protest in central Moscow on Sunday, seizing dozens of demonstrators and shoving them into trucks.
Organizers said 130 people were detained around the capital but police put the number at 90. The opposition movement headed by fierce Kremlin critic and former chess champion Garry Kasparov said the co-leader of the group was one of those seized.
The Other Russia movement organized the protest, in defiance of a ban, to draw attention to Russia's economic troubles and to protest Kremlin plans to extend the presidential term from four years to six. Critics say the constitutional change as part of a retreat from democracy and is aimed at strengthening the grip of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his allies.

For those of us who can not watch because we are at work, could you tell us the kinds of things that a "patriot" would not say?

He calls Putin a dictator and says that Russia supplies weapons to Iran and wants them to create the atomic bomb, because they want "tensions" in the Middle East to keep the oil price high, or else Russia collapses he says.

He says the polls that show 60% approval for Putin are false - and that is a lie. This interview is from the time Putin was president and he had that kind of approval rating.

The tone of his voice, he talks about Russia like Bush would do.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'R')iot police flown in from Moscow clubbed, kicked and arrested dozens of people in Russia’s Far East today as hundreds across the country demonstrated against an increase in car import tariffs.

Officers held around 200 people – including several reporters – as up to 1,000 demonstrators protested for a second day running in Vladivostok. About 200 others rallied in Moscow in support.

Inflation, rising unemployment and a slide in the rouble have driven discontent and the Kremlin fears the deteriorating economic situation could lead to public unrest.

With domestic production suffering, the Government announced this month higher tariffs on imported cars.

Demonstrations have been most vehement in Vladivostok, Russia’s largest Pacific port, through which nearly all cars from Japan are imported.

Hundreds rallied in the city yesterday for the second weekend in a row and demonstrators hoped to rally again on Sunday. But authorities refused to authorise the demonstration and hundreds of riot police blocked off the city square where it was planned.
