I just miss Monte.... and the quality of discussion that used to be.
Has the "Golden Goose" been killed off?

He's left behind enough posts to provide a lifetime of reading material. He has nothing new to contribute that he hasn't already stated 1,000 times prior (which he used to love to remind us of before repeating it yet again).

He was pretty confused about some thermodynamic concepts such as "closed systems". I don't think he ever got it right.

Oh, I think I always had it right.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Montequest', 'T')he only truly isolated system we know of is the universe. But there are two other system types: open and closed. The earth is an example of a closed system. It exchanges energy with the universe, but not matter, save the occasional meteorite. Since it is a closed system it is always being degraded by entropy.

Living organisms, on the other hand, are an example of an open system, where both matter and energy are exchanged.

No, that is not right. The sun is always bathing the Earth in negative entropy. As long as the sun shines, our closed system will not be degraded by entropy. Now if the sun were to suddenly go dark, that is a different story....

Hmm... I just cut and pasted that from a thread I wrote. No wonder. Don't know why I wrote "Since it is a closed system it is always being degraded by entropy." Cut and paste error??? I think the confusion comes from me using closed, isolated, and open systems, instead of just open and closed.

In isolated systems, entropy always increases.

But as the earth is not a truly isolated system, it does exchange some matter. However, entrophy is about energy, not matter, thus the closed system of earth is not being degraded by entropy as I stated, "It exchanges energy with the universe."

I admit the paragraph was in conflict with itself. My bad.

Edit: Figured out the problem. My computer draft and the website thread were different, I had long ago caught the error and edited it to say: "Since it is a closed system it's environment is always being degraded by entropy, but the thermodynamic equilibrium with space is maintained by the input of solar radiation."

Given that clarification, I still don't know why people thought I was confused about closed systems.
