My town is filled with Morons

Unread postby Turlox » Tue 16 Dec 2008, 18:13:31

I try to point out to my local Flagstaff residents that retroffiting building next to a rail line into a bar is a waste of time and according to the comments I am a "negative nancy. They also assume that Long distance trucking is a viable system that will operate in the future. If you want a quick laugh enjoy the stupidity of my neighbors.

:) A bar on beaver street with its own attached brewery next to a train station so you can get grain and hops in and ship bottled beer out even post peak? Sounds like a perfect setup to me. Perhaps you could add a hotel upstairs that rents rooms by the day or by the hour. you could call it the Long Branch Hotel. All you need is Miss Kitty to run the place and Festus and Newly to run out the drunks.:)

I am totally pro inebriation however, I think there are many better uses to be utilized. There is also a third rail spur that split off for approximately 500 feet that would be ideal for unloading any cargo from the future. Flagstaff is probably the most ideal post peak city in terms of benefits in Arizona due to rail access but we will probably blow it and make this place a dead zone.

You're probably correct, but if this is the stupidest thing your town does I would say you are in pretty good shape!

Count your blessings. Our county spent a few million to buy a bankrupt racetrack on contaminated ground.

The City has also done other bone headed moves IMHO.

They pledged to give Horizon Air $600,000 if they didn't meet passenger load requirements. They are not going to meet them so the City is out $600,000. This after a lengthening of the runway at Pulliam Airport. They also built an indoor Aquaplex in a city that gets more snow than Green Bay Wisconsin. If memory serves we receive the 2nd most snowfall for any city over 50,000 in pop. They also heavily subsidized a Mall Expansion project were most of the retailers are now bankrupt. Linens and Things was one of the anchor stores.

I know that my city and locale is not the only area where we continue to do the wrong things but sometimes you just have to share the stupidity with the rest of the world.

I wish I could go back to being ignorant again... I'd blow my money on gadgets and good living, take out a huge loan on a dream house in a remote part of Europe, enjoy the highest quality of life on the most affluent continent. Sigh, why hadn't I taken the blue pill...

turlox--

you really think our future selves will be sending scarce resources back in time to help us out? google peak oil
we will be running out of resources way before we even get the chance to invent the time machine you assume will be available.

(sorry, i saw "cargo from the future" and got carried away)

An organization that took a bunch of money from productive citizens by force is not spending that money wisely?

I find that hard to believe.

Our town got a $700,000 grant to put a new wooden deck (for foot & bike traffic) on an old abandoned bridge right next to the perfectly good highway bridge that replaced it in 1957--i. e., another "bridge to nowhere".
With the county's secondary roads rapidly crumbling, this caused a lot of flak at the commissioner's meeting. Their excuse: "The money was allocated for this use only so it was "take it or leave it". There was no real answer to: "Why not just leave it?".

The outfit that will do the redecking isn't even from this state.
