$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('galacticsurfer', 'a')nybody got a link for arable land per capita in UK and food production possible without imports (including fertilizer imports). Is die-off mandatory from an analytical standpoint?

Yes, but in other nations. Some-time between the end of the riots and the collapse of agricultural production the docks at Portsmouth will start to fill up with hastily-built, but horribly efficient light cruisers, landing craft & submarine escorts. All painted in radar-evading black and commanded by political officers wearing the official party 'Skull & Shovel' armbands...

(Oops me imagination going again, silly me, maybe I'll just go an' have another ale - grin).

Here's a chart I found ages ago when arguing with Cashmere, it's a bit old but interesting because of the comparisons between countries. The UK really is one of the worst places to be in terms of available cropping land/hungry mouths.

Interesting little pic of the British 'Grand Fleet' against the Germans WW1. Count the 'Battleships': You'll get too about twice the size of the current US Navy & still be counting the dots on the horizon. And that was with an Empire in decline.

Everyone still comfortable out there???

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he plummeting pound will not be propped up by government intervention, ministers declared yesterday, as it emerged that they will simply hope Britain's beleaguered currency stabilises as broader measures to stimulate the economy begin to take effect.

Sterling has fallen to a series of record lows against the euro in recent days, and looks set to reach parity with the single European currency for the first time. Its fall has hit holidaymakers as well as the thousands of Britons living on the Continent, who have seen the value of pensions and savings plummet.

With the UK being neutered by a currency collapse, does that mean Argentina will have another crack at securing the Falkland Islands (Isles Malvinas)? Back when Britain had that silly little war over those god-forsaken pieces of wind-swept real estate, I was one of those nuts that was rooting for Argentina...LOL.

Somebody needs to send a memo to those folks down there, this just might be their chance to take back those islands...LOL.

On another note, I really, really hope Canada doesn't open the doors for the Brits to immigrate en masse to Canada, that needs to be reserved for resident North Americans, k? The Brits can go to someplace much closer to home - like France, for example (which is what I'd be doing if I was living in the UK).

I don't think we're allowed to favour one nation or another over the rest. It's all done by a point system now. Refugees are a different matter, but "economic refugee" is a calumny, not a category. Besides, I don't imagine things are going to be all that much better here than over there anyway.

Krugman maybe a Noble prize winner but I have to dispute his GDP assumptions.
The GDP number, particularly for the US, is based on artificially inflated activity derived through debt. I do not regard that as being an honest measure.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('kjmclark', 'B')ut what percent of GDP is the UK debt up to? Paul Krugman pointed out a while ago that the US debt isn't too bad compared to GDP and historical ratios of debt to GDP. If the situation is the same for the UK, then it probably is less of a problem right now than letting a budding deflation bear fruit.

Osborne is certainly right to point out the potential problem, but that doesn't mean currency collapse is imminent, or even a serious concern at this point. Heading off deflation looks like a much more difficult problem.
