Nobody would have thrown a show at Obama.

The Koran says thou must not throw shoes at another Muslim brother. The penalty is the stoning of your first child and the raping of your wife in public.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Sixstrings', 'S')ecret Service was disturbingly slow to react. This guy had time to make epithets AND launch two shoes -- one at a time. You'll notice it was an Arab-looking reporter who reacted first, putting himself between the President and the shoe-thrower.

Bush waved off his own secret service escort to prevent things from getting more out of control.

Bush waved off his secret service detail, prevented response to Iraqi shoe-thrower.

Dream on.

The secret service was there and doing their usual superb job. Bush waved them off to prevent a larger incident from developing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Plantagenet', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Carlhole', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Plantagenet', 'B')ush is still in great physical shape, with his biking exercise regime. Obama is 20 years younger and in even better condition because of his basketball exercise regime. I'm sure Obama would've handled that situation even better then Bush did.

No one is going to pelt Obama with shoes out of hatred.

Do you really believe Obama will be universally loved in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the US will once again be the friend of all, and all the cuddly puppies and fuzzy kittens at the pound will be adopted once Bush leaves office?

Bush has managed to arouse the intense hatred of foreigners and the disgust and contempt of most Americans -- far more than most presidents ever have, even at their worst.

Everything the man has ever touched has turned to shitt. I say good riddance, dog!

Its a traditional arab insult to touch someone with your shoe or foot.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the DC press corps adopt this exotic custom during their last press conference with Bush.

I think bush's secret service escort did an unusually bad job here. The shoe-thrower fires off a very fast shoe...then bends down, takes off his other shoe, stands up straight, and fires off the second shoe. That second shoe could have been a gun or an explosive. And it shouldn't matter that the POTUS waved the lead service guy off...secret service agents are required to make a security judgement call independent of what the POTUS says. The agents guarding Bush at this press conference got lucky, imo.

Another thing. While I am deeply opposed to all things Bush, the guy ducked those shoes like a champion and stood his ground. If only he was that nimble and cool-headed in presidential matters more important than shoe-ducking.

Guess the press are all going to surrender their shoes before they're admitted to the press conference from now on.

I am reminded here of Nikita Kruschev taking off his shoe and pounding it on the desk at the United Nations around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

When the Shoes come off in the Political Arena, you can be pretty sure TSHTF :-)

I mean really folks, just the idea that the American President is so thoroughly despised somebody would throw shoes at him really speaks volumes about how far down we already have sunk, with a long way still to go of course.

I can't imagine how Bush will have the NERVE to stand up in front of anything but a carefully selected and vetted bunch of reporters for any kind of "news conference" through to Obama's Inauguration. You put Bush out in front of ANY audience that isn't totally vetted and selected, its GUARANTEED that the Rotten Tomatoes and Rotten Eggs and Shoes wll be flying. The man is universally despised by ALL.

I hope he has a real good bunker after he leaves office. There are gonna be plenty of people with an axe to grind here lining up to take a shot at him, and its NOT just J6P. Its plenty of folks with money GONE from their Hedge Funds as a result of his thievery and policies. He has a tough post presidency ahead of him.

I think it was the perfect send off for a president that has led his country at war, abused human rights, presided over a broken economy and sat on his hands as huge energy\environmental security threats loom.

Good bye and good riddance.

Last Republican President? You have got to be kidding!!!. With Mary Poppins as president, the idiot Reid, and nut job Pelosi!! Remember obama won by 6 - 7 % in an election thrown by the media (see Washington Post ombudsman's report) They have two years to change the situation, with no leadership skills, no experience, and fairytale expectations. This same shoe guy will be begging to kiss Bush's dog (another Arab thing) within two years of Mary Poppins administration.

Fishman, I think I'm in love...

Obama is going to try another go at FDR's Keynesian "let's outspend the depression" crap and that didn't work too well in the 1930s. And those many decades ago, America was in much better shape than today.

Here's a link to the article you referenced, where WP ombudsman Deborah Howell says the coverage in the Post was very much in favor of the Big 0.

How does a thread about a shoe being thrown at Bush jump to another thread about Obama. Im not a fan of any politician but I am very happy to see Bush leaving Washington. Since were already off topic Id love to hear what hope_full and fishman would do under the current economic circumstances if they were President. No disrespect, but its easy to criticize someone else's idea's.

Bush has ALREADY tried the "let's outspend the Depression" crap. It isn't WORKING.

Obama will try the National Socialist approach. It ALSO will not work, because Nazis need a deep pocket to fund them.

The workable approach is most likely the "Shoot First ask questions later" approach. Woever is left standing will be your new leader.
