Arctic blast coming

Record lows expected even in southern California by next Monday. Even worse storm predicted for just before Christmas. Better check your local long range forecast and get ready.

May need more wood pellets. Maybe 4,000lbs won't be enough? Anyways, it's always cold up here in the winter.....

Damn, I hate cold weather. Frigid temps in San Diego? I hope this passes through fast. I went for a walk once in Huston when the temps were near zero. I soon grew afraid of freezing. I hustled back to my hotel room and never again underestimated the danger of cold.

What is really happening is a very impressive pattern shift. For the past month or so the east has been solidly below normal, while the west has been baking. In a span of about two days, there is going to be this flip where the west gets really cold and the east moderates. I have to think that at least part of the reason why Nat Gas futures just recently went below $6 is because the cold is progged to move away from the Eastern population centers.

Shanny,

Yeah, the GFS 3 or 4 days ago had a tremendous cold snap coming down in the central US and then moving over to the east. As we got closer, that solution really backed off. Now it looks like a 1-2 day cold shot along the eastern seaboard that isn't any colder than it is now after the storm on Thurs/Fri and then a nice warmup. Shows you the status of the 7+ day modeling still :(

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')orecaster Cameron Venable is seeing very cold temperatures in the Los Angeles areas as well. Torrance is not usually known for winter weather, thus making this an interesting event for Venable to track.

"Temperatures in Siberia, Russia will be -81 degrees this week, "said Martin. "With those type of temperatures the arctic air mass has to spill somewhere. Our answer of the exact track will become more clear this week. All residents in the mountain communities should prepare this week for very cold, winter weather, with snow."

Indications are a second, colder storm could hit near the 18th-22nd time-frame. The details on that will have to be sorted out.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'T')he model was forecasting HIGHS around 0 Fahrenheit in Kansas.

Is that unusual? We get that all the time in Montana. I usually think of Kansas as being one of those plains states that gets blizzards all the time.

Zero in Kansas would be considered really cold. Not unheard of, but not normal either. In Arkansas, we basically just south of them and share similar weather here. Anything below 20 is considered cold, anything under 10 is really cold. Anything under zero, virtually unheard of.

It's supposed to get up to 70 tomorrow here in NC. :) But then it's back down to the 40's for the high. Even a one day respite from the "cold" will be nice.

The weather is getting very crazy.

Meh. "Virtually unheard of" starts at -50 in Montana. We get -30 to -40 at least once in most years.

Yes, and that's why not many people live in Montana or Alaska, and why early indigenous people in fact migrated south from Alaska.

Cool! God, I love the weather hope it happens.

Went through a storm last year with baseball sized hail for about 15minutes that will put the fear of God in ya for sure.

This has always amazed me. We are probably no more than 150 mile south west of you (as the crow flys) yet our winter temps are a world away from those in the Kalispell area. Here we're in cold weather if is gets below 20 at night. We are lucky to be at the eastern edge of the "Banana Belt" and it helps to have all those tall mountains between us and the frigid center of the country.

We had quite an interesting storm last night - high winds, thunder and lightning, rain, sleet, then snow! :-D

It's getting (slightly) cold(er) even here in Sunny Singapore.
Especially at night. But I'm still waiting for the snow to fall.

All is still well here in San Diego. Blue skies, warm temps. Knock on wood. Eventually we'll see snow on the mountains in the back country, but no Arctic Blast around here, yet. The forecast is for a drop from the 70s to the 60s and rain for the weekend. Hardly an Arctic Blast.
