A Doomer Rant in the MSM. Nice.

I feel somewhat vindicated somebody else sees this as Monetary System Collapse and not just a Depression though :-)

This is the start of a Dark age not a depression. The system will never reboot because of resource complexity. After the Oil companies bankrupt the lights will go out forever. Most of the human race alive now will die-off horribly.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')ut instead of telling us straight, it calls the crisis the “credit crunch” to make it sound like a breakfast cereal...

Now that was a fun read.
Lord, here comes the flood

If again the seas are silent in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive...

Novus, come on. This is not something you can sugarcoat. This is a real serious problem that is not going away overnight. :)

Is that really a doomer rant? Clarkson lays on the sarcasm so thick you don't know what the hell he really thinks. Isn't his job to review cars? There is hardly a review here at all. He's not doing his job for sure. All I know is he's a global warming denier and a internal combustion lover so it's unlikely that he has or will ever accept the idea that "happy motoring" is dead man walking.

Spinning this rant as possible sarcasm misses the point. Even if it IS sarcasm, it doesn't read that way to anyone except a person who considers Doomsday scenarios. Blank your mind of everything you ever read here, consider yourself a typical J6P reader of a column about Automobiles, and just how would you pick up on sarcasm in this rant?

Rather what I think in subtext is going on in this column is Clarkson is working through his own demons. He doesn't WANT to believe the automobile is "dead man walking", and so he is publishing the worst case scenarios told to him (or which he read lurking on PO) as a means to purge himself of contemplating such scenarios. "There, I wrote it, now I can Move On."

Regardless of the motivation BEHIND the column, how it reads to the unitiated is as a well researched analysis of concepts Clarkson gleaned from other "experts" in the field of finance. He doesn't name them of course, which either means he is pulling them out of thin air or what he is reading here on Peak Oil is bugging him so much he feels it necessary to write a response to that.

I think he is more interested in making the Labour look bad and ineffective than selling the end of the world or introducing it into people's minds.

The end of the world narrative just fits his rhetorical purposes at this time.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') have spoken to a couple of pretty senior bankers in the past couple of weeks and their story is rather different. They don’t refer to the looming problems as being like 1992 or even 1929. They talk about a total financial meltdown. They talk about the End of Days.

Good link.. strong stuff there.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')f an enormous meteorite was heading our way and the authorities knew it couldn’t be stopped or diverted, why bother telling anyone? Best to let us soldier on in the dark until it all goes dark for real.

Thi should not be Newz to you SS. I have been hammering down on this point for months.

The fact there is no *safe haven* fo wealth, the fact that about every person on this board right now asks the question "so what do I DO with my money" should make it obvious to you that ALREADY what we take to mean "money" has ceased to function as a meaningful commodity.

The ONLY thing that has not quite YET occurred is for the lack of real value to money being moved into the real economy, though its happening to some sooner than others as deflation takes away their jobs and their incomes. The inability to participate in the monetary system has not happenned to you quite yet, but soon enough it will happen to us ALL.

Prep up, know who your friends are, and stay as far away as you can from high population areas. Its coming down the pipe, and I am NOT the only person who sees that.

Reverse,

I think I'm just shocked to read a MSM article that sounds like it was penned by ReverseEngineer. ;)

Seriously, your posts are always fun to read, and informative. Regardless, I haven't changed my personal doom meter -- signs of shortages in stores.

I'll continue to monitor the situation as it develops. One thing to watch for sure are these monthly unemployment numbers. Before the Nov number came out, the CNBC crowd was pegging 350k as worst case. So the actual figure, 530k (and will be more when revised), was indicative of the situation being worse than conventional wisdom thinks.

:-D You obviously haven't read many of his reviews- they usually consist of rants on whatever his favoured bugbear happens to be that week, which often has very little to do with cars at all, and then a brief(often refreshingly abusive for a vehicle reviewer) evaluation of the car in question. He must be a very good writer, because I have no interest in cars, can't stand his politics and yet I often read his articles and usually get a chuckle or two out of them.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')ll I know is he's a global warming denier and a internal combustion lover so it's unlikely that he has or will ever accept the idea that "happy motoring" is dead man walking.

True, but despite his tongue being firmly in his cheek- "I can see the day when I will have to shoot some of my neighbours - maybe even David Cameron - as we fight for the last bar of Fry’s Turkish Delight in the smoking ruin that was Chipping Norton’s post office"-
I suspect he's genuinely starting to feel a teensy bit nervous. And if Clarkson, of all people, is anything less than 110% bullish about capitalism, oil, motor cars or anything else coming down the pipe, then the end times are indeed near. Look for the signs: streams flowing uphill, frogs falling from the sky, and ReverseEngineer posting only terse, monosyllabic minimalism :P be afraid people, be very afraid 8O

You've got to be kidding. Clarkson's article is a straight-forward--albeit with humourous stylistic flourishes--public lament about the ever-worsening global economic conflagration. Don't mistake saracsm for satire.

"Reverse Engineer" and "terse monosyllabic minimalism" in the same sentence is an Oxymoron :-) Only possible in 4 years on 12/21/2012, when everything which you hold as True becomes False. Then I will write like Rapa Nui with Me Tarzan, You Jane Telegraphy.
