The Podborka-11 Doomsday War Machine

Just too cool! I use it as my desktop wallpaper.

I wonder if it was a real prototype attempt or if this is just something photoshop sendup?

It looks like a real WWI - Early 20's photograph. The name of the photo file was Podborka-11. Must be Russian if that is indeed the name.

It's like an aerial doomsday aerocraft designed by someone who knew more about concrete reinforced cannon placements than aircraft design. Wonder if they ever cranked that thing up? I count 12 engines.

Its 3D rendering or photoshop. No aircraft like that I have ever been aware of.

It's fake.

Look at the people in the picture; they look a bit like Sims. And the airplane itself looks like a flying wing; that's a little bit too modern.

Have fun!

I too am skeptical that this thing is aerodynamically capable of doing anything except rolling around on the runway and burning fuel.

Speaking of fuel, I wonder what the fuel usage rate would be for something of that size. 8 big propeller motors.

Thirdly from a military standpoint it remains to be seen what the strategic value would be of something that big and slow that you have to keep in the air for some length of time. An apparent easy target for a determined fighter.

Still, kind of a fun picture.

Nice work. Sombody had fun with that, but with 8 propeller engines and all those naval style cannon it would never get off the ground. Howard Hughes built a similar sized flying boat called the "Spruce Goose" and even without all the armament that had the same problem - he could barely get it into the air.

I have, back home, a book called "The Worst Aircraft in the World", that treats this kind of, er, contraptions, and that one is nowhere to be seen. 12 engines of WWI would still produce less than 2000hp, and that doesn't seem enough to get such a thing, that probably doesn't get that much lift, in the air.

They did some very crazy things back then, check for instance the Lebedenko Tank:

And we might as well not forget the 1934 Russian propaganda flying machine, the Tupolev ANT-20 Maxim Gorky, complete with loudspeakers, internal cinema and typography:

I want one. Would be handy for the commute to work, apart from a few issues with fuel economy and parking.

There is 16 propeller motors, if you look closely the other eight are on top of the wing.

This could fly with enough power.

It isn't real picture though, never really existed.

Imagine parking the damn thing!

The picture looks like something I saw in a computer game.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'Y')eah, there are more photos here:
link to thread in another forum

Takes a while to load; if you page down there are more pix like the OP from Carlhole:

It was an actual design from 1928!

Take a look at the rear-view pic that Shanny linked to. There are pusher props as well. It probably had 24 engines.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n early 30's aviation design bureau, lead by K.A.Kalinin, was a well set team capable to solve absolutely new unexpected problems in aircraft design. For example, the 1929-1930 schedule KB included producing 3-engined passenger aircraft K-7, also designated as "K-Tjazholij" (K-Heavy), for the 500hp German BMW "Hornet" engines. It was designed to carry 22 passengers. Mockup prototype was tested in the TsAGI wind tunnel in September 1928, and was approved for production by the Scientific-Technical Commetee VVS in March following year.

But production was not started, and designation K-7 was used later for transcontinental aircraft project, started in 1928. 'Idea to built K-7,- K.A.Kalinin wrote later,- came to me long ago, as early as 1925. In 1929 the project was formulated and after two years of refinement it started to come to life... During creation of new huge machines new paths lead to new schemes of aircraft, to using of the wing to house payload. It means that those paths lead to the flying wing, which is exactly the perfect aircraft. To complete the transition to flying wing it is necessary to build a plane following the concept "everything is in the wing"'.

Great links, Shanny!

No, it wasn't. The K-7 is apparently the inspiration for the funny computer-generated creation in the original post, which is many times bigger, and infinitely sillier, than the real K-7, which was certainly big and impressive enough for its day.

The Russians love big planes. Case in point: The magnificent, one-of-a-kind Antonov An-225 "Mriya".

Those two three-gun turrets are from a World War 2-era battleship!

I love the blonde in the white jacket: She's pulling a 21st-century rolling carry-on suitcase. Wherever she's going, why would they take her in that thing? What's that beast supposed to be, a heavily-armed commercial airliner!?!?
