We won't have mass starvation in the US for a while. Believe me, if the US is bailing out banks and auto companies, they can prop up agriculture by one means or another. You guys are just stretching to manufacture your desired zombie scenario. The more likely scenario is that things will get "bad" but that's not dystopian enough to satisfy the doomers. We need to look like Ethiopia overnight.

A farmer told me it cost $600/acre to raise corn in 2008. Need a pretty high yield and a good price to make any money raising corn this past year.

If farmers can't get credit or credit is expensive, and diesel and fertilizer is high next spring, farmers may just need a government incentive to plant.

How long is a while? How many years is your guesstimate?

And last I heard, US is not bailing auto companies or any others except banks. Those black holes of debt.

Fer shizzy, $600/acre is more or less at cost assuming 150bushels/acre and ~$4/bushel.
