I saw the movie I.O.U.S.A. yesterday. It was informative and in places entertaining, but above all, it was deeply sobering. They're forecasting annual $2 trillion deficits by 2040 and a debt by then of 244% US GDP at the time -- twice what it was at the height of WWII. Steps can be taken to reverse this -- figuring out what spending to cut (mostly military, IMO), and a rise in taxes to generate revenues. I thought it was interesting that until the late 60s, the US had essentially none of its debt held by foreigners, and today it's 44%. That's some unbelievable leverage for foreign governments.
Their site actually has a 30-minute condensed version that cuts most of the talking head bits and simply deals with the facts. It's important to see, I think.
