I think there is a different kind of the often lambasted 'entitlement mentality' here in the US that applies to some of our "country boys". A fair number of these folks feel that they are entitled to take wildlife from private or government property. They want to have a version of living of the land but the problems is they don't have any land.
This post raises an interesting issue. It sounds like in the UK, the poachers goal is to sell the meat and raise money. Maybe in the near future, the goal will change to getting meat for personal consumption/ survival and many more locals will take to the woods in search of food.
Yesterday in my backyard, I saw two good sized bucks (one with a 6 point rack). I know most of our local deer would be gone almost instantly if TSHTF and hunger becomes a real problem.
Also, every local will be out on our big lake trying to snare fish (and others will be polluting the water by washing in it and emptying toilet buckets)
