$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BigTex', 'I')'m actually surprised that Chrysler is only valued at zero. I would have thought it would represent a huge net liability with many claims from creditors, retirees, landlords, dealerships, parts manufacturers, etc.
It wouldn't surprise me if there total liabilities actually are greater
but...
You can’t squeeze blood from a turnip

so I guess the number Zero sounds more appropriate then say negative $5B or whatever the "true" number is. :?

Here's the problem:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Newsweek', 'W')hy would the government want anything to do with this car carnage? The alternative is automotive Armageddon. Without the GM-Chrysler combo, its advocates argue, all of Detroit will tumble into bankruptcy. And that will take down thousands of parts suppliers, dealers and other businesses that depend on the American automakers. Even the Toyota, Honda and Nissan auto factories in America could shut down because their U.S. suppliers would go belly up. Total job loss: 2 million Americans, according to a study by the Center for Automotive Research. "A graceful exit for Chrysler is highly preferable to a catastrophe," says Cole. That's why the governors of six states just asked Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Fed chairman Ben Bernanke to take "immediate action" to bail out Detroit.

What a mess...

I wonder what would become of their ENVI plugin/EV program? Would it just fold into the Volt project? I'm less concerned about Chrysler and more concerned with GM, since the Volt is kind of the industry litmust test of plugins.

Nice quote. 2 million more jobs lost? That would get people rioting on the streets. No wonder GM, Ford and Chrysler can go tough on the Treasury and the Fed: they've become, quite literally, too large to fail. Save them now, delay the problem until when?

Funny thins is, the dollar's up, the oil is down, petrol prices are going through the floor and still the truck's sales won't take off. It really is a matter of reduced demand, not habit changing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')hey are the standard for junk.

No way. I rode around in one of those Dodge police cruisers the other night with the hemi, and those things can really move out. Comfortable, smooth driving. The cop I was with says they will whip anything on the road except the Shelby Mustang, and they already know who in town has those. (note: I was in the front seat, not the back).

However, those guys do not have to pay for their own gas.

I wanted to like the PT Cruiser, but I rented one once and actually hated it.

Maybe it's a good time to snatch a Viper for cheap ... or nearly free.

Yup. Increased demand for the "classic" status and dropping fuel prices meets definitively constrained demand.

GM picks up tools and keeps on building the thing? Or maybe the garage producers pick it up, like the AC Cobra? Anyway, big supply constraints ahead.

I had never thought about that... Is there a big overlap between the automakers in terms of suppliers? Weird how competitors can rely on each other to keep operating...

In other words, either we'll have another massive corporate bailout or massive unemployment? Which one will it be?

What if the government pays the workers 100,000 dollars each to quit? Instead of paying the corporation heads for firing them? What a novel idea.

As these car plants close..imagine the impact on the areas around them? Imagine most closed plants and towns they occupy in 10 years will look like Old Motown.
I read for every 1 car worker laid off..4 other people lose their jobs..Like the local stores and malls around auto plants ect..

That was funny! Thanks for the smile.

Technically, GM will be the survivor company of this "merger", so I'd like to hope the GM dealers will survive. But hope is cheap. Bill Heard Chevrolet, the largest GM dealer in the world, just announced they're "liquidating". There are only 2 stores left taking care of the liquidation. One is in Stafford, TX. (I bought a Blazer there in 2000, a SmartBuy deal for less than $200/month.)

There will be plenty of parts, new and used, going around for 10 years easy!

Actually, it's one of those situations where it's easy for us to smile if we're not working for any of the directly effected companies. I actually like Chrysler: lots of creepy (and crappy) cars, but a lot of good designs as well. Bus mostly, the eventual bankruptcy/sale of the company will hurt a lot of people. It's a good laugh, alright! But I'm still hoping Renault/Samsung buys Jeep and GM won't fire everyone there, so damage might be minimised.
