Andre the Giant: The greatest drunk on earth

Postby Specop_007 » Tue 28 Oct 2008, 11:18:19

Wow, impressive. I like to drink but I couldnt begin to accomplish what Andre did. Its a great article, I recommend giving it a read.
Click

You won’t find it in the Guinness Book of World Records, but Andre the Giant holds the world record for the largest number of beers consumed in a single sitting. These were standard 12-ounce bottles of beer, nothing fancy, but during a six-hour period Andre drank 119 of them. It was one of the few times Andre got drunk enough to pass out, which he did in a hallway at his hotel. His companions, quite drunk themselves, couldn’t move the big man. Fearing trouble with cops, they stole a piano cover from the lounge and draped it over Andre’s inert form. He slept peacefully until morning, unmolested by anyone. Perhaps the hotel people thought he was a piece of furniture.

Think about it: 119 beers in six hours. That’s a beer every three minutes, non stop. That’s beyond epic. It’s beyond the ken of mortal men. It’s god-like.

Well I'm quite impressed.

I know an old builder guy who told me to stick to beer, never dable with wine or spirits and my liver will be fine, those guys (the spirit drinkers) have livers like teabags he said. I mean thats pretty good advice, no nead to consult with the medical proffesion.

but 1 beer every 3 minutes! even if it wasn't alcoholic I should think that volume of liquid passing through the system would cause damage enough! sheesh.

At my peak drunken Navy days I couldn't have gotten much further than a case, in six hours.

That is an insane amount of beer to drink at once.

Drinking on every three minutes, I could get through a 6 pack, but probably not too much further.

Sorry to screw up this thread by thinking about it....

but 119 12-ounce beers equals about 11.2 gallons.

But Andre weighed 500 lbs, which is the equivalent of 2.8 175 pound people.

So, for an average "person" it's only about four gallons of beer equivalent.

In a six hour period, that's only about 2/3 of a gallon per hour. Now to be sure, you would get wasted, but I think the equivalent feat is do-able. A standard bar pitcher is a half gallon, so a little more than a pitcher per hour for one guy (or lady, I suppose, if so inclined).

There are probably plenty of college kids in the nation who, at 175 lbs, could have approached this.

The problem is body weight is not a direct correlation to ability to "hold your beer" as it were.

Theres plenty of heavy guys who can drink very little just as theres plenty of skinny guys who seem to drink all night long.

I started having trouble playing Drink Your Age quite some time ago. 119 beers? Thats incredible. I am but an amateur.

True enough. We expect by this time smallpoxgirl will set us straight, but to be sure, your ability to drink a lot of beer depends on your ability to retain/purge that much fluid from your system, and also, to metabolize the alcoholic content fast enough so that you do not pass out from the toxic effects.

It depends on muscle/fat ratio, general metabolism rate, and also, there is a conditioning factor. That is why a big fatass guy can not necessarily outdrink someone who is in a little bit of shape and used to going out and tipping a few, since, as the diet people all say, you have to have lean muscle to metabolize sugar effectively, which is basically equal to alcohol.

Around my native land, Iowa, there is legend of Chris Taylor, former massive multi-time NCAA champion heavyweight wrestler who got a medal in the 1972 olympics. This guy was known to be able to chug multiple pitchers of beer in some of the establishments around Ames. Not to be changing the subject but part of the problem with wrestling this guy was supposedly that he was gross--sweated, stunk, and had enough warts around his armpits, etc. to make most fairly normal opponents really reluctant to try to wrestle him. Also, there is legend of Ron Stander, tomato can who fought Joe Frazier and Ken Norton at one point, who could reportedly drink more or less steady state for a few days at a time.

Anyhow, the fate of Andre, and also Taylor, were the same--a young death. Those big guys a lot of times kick the bucket early. I think Stander is still alive somewhere.

A little story to confirm the truth of this point...here in NZ we have the unfortunate tradition that on his 21st birthday, a young man shall be forced by his 'friends' to scull(local dialect for drink as quickly as possible without stopping)a yardglass of beer. A yard is about 2.5 pints, which might not seem that much, but trust me- it is. This tradition ensures that for most guys, their memories of their 21st are vague, and often vomitous(what a marvellous cultural heritage I was born into :-D ). Anyway, when I was at universtiy many years ago, I knew a guy called Pete who had a remarkable capacity for alcohol. He was skinny as a bean pole, bit of muscle but not much and very little fat, maybe six foot but no more. On his 21st, Pete, who had been partying for hours by then, 'warmed up' for his yardie by sculling a big bottle(26oz)of beer, then did the yard no worries at all and very quickly. He showed very little ill effects of this, kept drinking and an hour or so later did another yard just for the hell of it 8O ...I was told later that he outlasted just about everyone at the party and was on good form throughout. I'm pretty sure most people would be hospitalised or dead if they tried something similar...

btw, couldn't agree more Aaron $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he best type-cast giant you will see this century. The Princess Bride (1987), Fezzik

Andre was the best, he was born looking like an ogre, no make up was required for that role :-D not like these muscle bound pretty boys they have now...a wrestler should have a bit of a gut on him I reckon...
