The People are Forgetting!!! (Peak Oil is Dead)

Unread postby jasonraymondson » Tue 28 Oct 2008, 12:51:09

There for awhile, the green movement around my parts was going full swing. People were starting to warm up to the idea of peak oil. Now everyone is dismissing it, and once again sure it was just greed. Since oil has gone down in price, the only explanation is greedy oil companies and middle easterners.

I am now keeping my mouth shut; I am not even going to mention peak oil. I had people believing me and asking my opinion about what to do just a month ago, and now these same people just laugh at me and at themselves for falling for my paranoia laced fairy tales.

From here on out, I am a cornucopian and whatever happens happens. I give up trying to explain anything, because our system does not work logically, due to having illogical morons running the show.

(I know why oil and gas are going down, I don't need a lesson) This is just the way things are.

This time I think it's the most dire situation Jason.
I think we are still on plateau, the price is below marginal barrel of tar sands, all the new investments may be delayed, and this means more or less that we reached peak of production in 2008.

Deleveraging market right now puts a huge deflationary force, commodity bubble burst, but as long as I don't see the price of oil below 30$ I'm not convinced (and that was the price in 2003).

Oh, and I'm not playing angel who whispers words of the prophecy. What for? Raise awareness? People are corrupted by their way of life which has nothing to do with reasonable thinking. They will hear the news in TV, they will be told by a machine that's controlling their life and has authority much higher than anyone in neighbourhood. In my case, it's better to do something than to tell someone.
Peak oil is only an indication and a premise of limits to growth on a finite planet.
Denial is the most predictable of all human responses.

Just say chill. We have to around 2025 before things get ugly. This is the good life still. Relax and sit back.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jasonraymondson', 'T')here for awhile, the green movement around my parts was going full swing. People were starting to warm up to the idea of peak oil. Now everyone is dismissing it, and once again sure it was just greed. Since oil has gone down in price, the only explanation is greedy oil companies and middle easterners.

Yup, same with most people I know. This should come as no surprise. Most people only started thinking about where oil comes from, and how long it might last, when they noticed it was hurting at the pump. Now that it's getting cheaper every day, by the same reasoning everything must be fine again. This merely confirms my feelings about trying to talk to people about peak oil- it's simply not worth it. If someone is at the point of genuinely wanting to find out about the subject, then fine, but otherwise, apart from the occasional one-liner, I don't bring it up at all.

As for me, none of what's happening seems out of line with what's been talked about here for years. The peak/plateau years are defined by extreme volatility, periods of very high prices resulting from tight demand/supply followed by crushing demand destruction, aka recession/depression, rinse and repeat. How is any of this not exactly what we have been expecting?

Yep.... not gonna try and raise awareness anymore either. I've got several people (including family) laughing at the whole idea now. A month or two ago, they were also considering prep for power down.

I'll just be quiet now and put a little salt on my popcorn.

I've had the opposite reaction with those I've spoken to regarding the new cheap gas prices. They all seem to know prices are only temporarily low and will reach new heights in due time... like, as in not too long from now.

Then you must hang around a select group.

Funny ... yeah, it's a select group, alright.

A grand total of ZERO of them realize worldwide oil production has peaked and will become scarcer over time. I get absolutely nowhere trying to explain this to anyone. But for some strange reason I keep trying. :)

Let them forget. It worked. They put how much $100 oil on their credit cards? They paid how much for food inflated to the moon? Most of them are screwed. Who cares whether they can list the expenses that will bankrupt them.

What is going on now should cause everyone including peakers to readjust plans. In the immediate future we may have more to deal with from the economic collapse than being priced out of liquid fuels.

Economic collapse was always a major part of the scenario of peak oil; I don't know why anyone would not have already planned for economic collapse. 8O

What readjustment of plans do you foresee being necessary?
