$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Quinny', '
')The owners of the casino must be getting a cut in some way. Why can't we just tax them, (and close the casino's down)

A major part of the problem is that there is *no* casino. CDS's are contracts between two parties.. they are not generally cleared through an exchange. If there was a casino owner the situation would not be so out of control. The casino would look at the contract, and the parties involved and would beable to call BS - "Hey you - you don't have the capital to pay up if you lose that bet. Get outa here, ya bum! "

But the gov't is run by cowboys, too. Not just W, but Paulson and his whole crew are the very high rollers who got us into this mess.

Of course, we (kinda) put the fools into office.

The bigger problem is that everyone making major financial decisions on every level in the US has been indoctrinated into neo-classical economic ideology where the market can do no wrong, greed is the ultimate good, regulations are always bad, and eternal growth is an absolute necessity.

As long as these are the unexamined and unquestioned assumptions of all those who make major decisions on the economy, we are farked.

I think the conclusion to this thread's title must be: the system IS the black hole .....

OK Ok Ok so here's the simple (no BS) explanation instead:

Err, it all went back to Japan.

That's it, really. So why is everyone looking at me like that? Ah hell, you'll figure it out...

BTW Does anyone remember that sort-of, whistle, snap-snap tune from the late 20's? Kinda catchy. Kinda goes, "Moneeeey, makes the world go around..."

Can anyone remember how the rest of it goes???

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('virgincrude', 'J')PL, that is an excellent analogy. I envy your kids, your bed time stories must be quite something!

As for tucking them off away on an island in the North Sea, I'm with the missus: extreme seclusion is not something most mothers would choose for their kids, and that sounds like some kind of 'survival' episode, only these little people would be deprived of interaction with their own kind at an important time of development. (Are you also doing homeschooling ....?)

My children know nothing of this world. For point of interest, here is a little private shot of my eldest daughters' bedroom, the beams are over 300 years old (she helped me restore them) and this her little 'Harry Potter' and dangly-crystal nest. We do our own thing. We are a very private family.

I do home schooling after my own fashion but it's not very conventional. A long story. But I'm sure we'll cope OK wherever we go (grin).
