PeakOil is You

PeakOil is You

sometimes i think this way and feel guilty about it:

Discussions related to the physiological and psychological effects of peak oil on our members and future generations.

sometimes i think this way and feel guilty about it:

Unread postby Chuckmak » Fri 25 Mar 2005, 10:23:23

thought:

"man why couldn't peak oil happen 40-50 years from now? this sucks"

reasoning:

1. i wish we didn't have to deal w/ this now, even tho we do
2. we woulda bought more time to develop other energy sources

anyone think like this sometime? i know i'm not alone.

If Peak Oil was going to happen 30 years from now it we wouldn't do anything about it just like they didn't do anything about 30 years ago when they knew it would be happening today.

Exactly. The Club of Rome did a great analysis more than 30 years ago. The result? They became famous as doomers, and nobody moved a finger.

I more commonly think. "Man why couldn't this have happened 40 years ago?" Every day that modern society further disrupts our world. Every forest that it clear cut. Every barrel of chemicals that is dumped in our water, or in our food. Every acre of land that is entombed under a highway or a shopping mall, moves us one step closer to our ultimate demise. Yesterday would not have been soon enough. IMHO.

so we basically have the same thoughts...only our timing and reasoning was different :P

I agree...but i also think...we had our "hayday"...alot of people went without starving because of it (the green revolution in the farming industry). We prospered, and now it's time to pay for it. It could have been tough all along or we could have had the temporary "progress" that we had.
But alas...the party is over

Don't be so pessimistic. We aren't going to return exactly to where we were before. And in many ways, I think it will be better.

I think "man I hope this happens while I'm still relatively young" because I don't want to have to deal with social upheaval when I'm old.

I think … “man I hope this holds off for at least 12-15 years so my baby daughters will at least be out of their diapersâ€

You inspired me to write in my blog -- I hardly ever do that!

http://www.bloglines.com/blog/johnmarkos

Here's what I wrote.

I remember a conversation with my father when I was about 12 or so (early 80s) in which we agreed that by the time I was middle aged (early part of 21st century), humanity would be facing a resource/environmental crisis. So I feel as though I've had twenty years to prepare already. Whatever will be will be. I don't worry about what might have been. Instead, I try to make myself strong enough and smart enough to do the right thing when things get rough. I plan to teach my children to do the same.

The positive side to living in interesting times? Maybe some of us (the courageous among us) will be heroes of some kind. Heroism seems an apt term for positive action if indeed the energy crisis is, as Jimmy Carter said, "the moral equivalent of war."

Sometimes when i think it might not happen for 30-40 years i think "man i hope it happens a lot sooner so i don't make a bunch of drastic changes in my life and career for no reason" and feel guilty about it. Then sometimes i think "man i hope this hits hard so people don't think i was a quack" and feel guilty too. :-D

I do worry more about how it will affect my kids than myself; i.e., the prep I do is for them.
