Newest scary thing from DoD

They never cease to astound.

NewScientist

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he latest request from the Pentagon jars the senses. ...They are looking for contractors to provide a "Multi-Robot Pursuit System" that will let packs of robots "search for and detect a non-cooperative human".

RFP Description: Develop a software and sensor package to enable a team of robots to search for and detect non-cooperative human presence in an indoor environment. ...Typical robots for this type of activity are expected to weigh less than 100 Kg and the team would have three to five robot ... Phase 3 ...intelligent and autonomous RFP

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')What we have here are the beginnings of something designed to enable robots to hunt down humans like a pack of dogs. Once the software is perfected we can reasonably anticipate that they will become autonomous and become armed.

We can also expect such systems to be equipped with human detection and tracking devices including sensors which detect human breath and the radio waves associated with a human heart beat. These are technologies already developed."

Why is the DoD messing with stuff that is getting way too close to Skynet/Terminator. What next? Everbody roll up your sleeves and get your bar-code tattoo.

So they want to create autonomous robocops in a world full of cyberhacks/viruses/worms, and this seems like a good idea?

Aye, not only that, they want them to hunt non-cooperative humans...

Well if those robots can be made from scavenged SUV parts and run on about 20 watts of electricity then they might be something to reckon with in the future.

As it stands I think they're an idea which only makes sense in a context of the military having ever increasing resources to work with... which is of course not the case.

I think this is a scare tactic paraded around by the industrial-military complex to keep the people down and keep funding up. Maybe a handful of these things will be made, they'll do a few showcase "raids" on this or that, and then they'll show up at "protests" as one of the comment posters mentioned - an opportunity to freak out the protesters and make sure they bemoan the things far and wide.

... and then soon they'll be a pile of rusting junk.

The military will be back to using their meat slaves to kill up close and personal shortly, and the robots will be a thing of the past.

Hope you have dogs to detect the termina...er..."detectors".

EDIT-

I am well prepared. Here is my anti-terminator detection system.

Well, all we have to do is cooperate. I don't know why you people are so concerned. If we just play ball their way, we'll be fine.

.
What effect would a taser have on one of those things?
Could they be captured and reprogrammed perhaps to gather and split firewood and to weed gardens?
If so, I want one.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

under certain circumstamces. they would not be hard to hack.

though of course, the DoD will try to make them un-hack-able.

Uh, no you won't be fine, you will be hit by 7 plagues, and not survive.

When this time comes you shouldn't be in a house anyway.

Robots are really stupid, you just walk up to it with a black blanket and cover it up and it shuts down, like a canary in a birddcage.

or hold a full length mirror in front of you and you can walk right through them.

how cool is that. Finally some engineering challenge. Doing some high tech development instead of just buying the latest chineese plastic crap that comes a long.

DoD will probably outsource production to Taiwan and China. They can handle the reverse engineering from there... :)

Cyborgs/androids are the ultimate military solution to guerilla warfare tactics, to be able to engage in house to house urban combat without risking any casualties.
