The phrase, "We are not alone," has taken on a new meaning this past year:

Economic angst has Americans stockpiling 'beans, bullets and Band-Aids’ By Kari Huus Reporter msnbc.com updated 48 minutes ago
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')EATTLE - Atash Hagmahani is not waiting for the stock market to recover. The former high-tech professional turned urban survivalist has already moved his money into safer investments: Rice and beans, for starters.
“I hoard food,” says Hagmahani, 44, estimating that he has enough to last his family a year or two. “I’m not ashamed to admit it.”
“People keep asking when this (economic crisis) is going to clear up,” says Hagmahani, who agreed to be interviewed on the condition that he be identified only by this pseudonym, which he uses for his survivalist blog, or by his first name, Rob. …
Getting ready for ‘TEOTWAWKI:’
“There are a lot more people — a lot more eager people — who are trying to get themselves squared away logistically,” said Rawles, who lectures and writes books on preparing for and surviving “TEOTWAWKI” — The End Of The World As We Know It. ...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ivan_M', 'i')f your stocking now youve started to late.
If you still have the capability to stock up provisions, yet do not need to rely solely upon those stores of goods for your survival, then it is not too late. Doing whatever you can, no matter how little that might seem, could pay huge dividends in the future.

For example, 200 lbs of salt acquired right now could have numerous valuable uses, including a valuable trade item later. Regular table salt, (NaCl) is selling in my local grocery store for $0.39 per pound.

Don't worry, you have plenty of time yet. Remember oil was $149 and now it's fallen to $65, peakoil is not yet, any survival food will have to be replaced because of out of date when real SHTF.

I agree. Get some salt, some cooking oil, popcorn and enjoy the show! [smilie=new_popcornsmiley.gif]

Don't forget the candles. How are you going to pop that popcorn? Stack some books on one side and some more on the other side and let the candles provide the heat. When the candles run out, well, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I've got Fresnel Lenses. Should be enough to make fire for a while. When they decay, it's spinning sticks. Oh the joys of rediscovering things that have been taken for granted for so long.
