$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('vaseline2008', 'A')nyone know why the Yen is up against the Dollar? Just wondering...

I don't completely understand it, but I think they're saying it's got to do with the unwinding of the Yen carry-trade.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Zardoz', 'T')he Nikkei is now down to a quarter of what it was at its historic bubble-on-bubble high.

And yet Japan endures. We will, too.

Get some sleep, people. We're still up to our knees in crude oil. When that changes, we'll have something to worry about. Until then, we'll muddle through.

I guess it all hinges on what you mean by "muddle".

Millions muddled through in the 30s by starving and losing 40 or so pounds.

Just sayin.

I can't find any information about circuit breaker levels for the Nikkei. Anybody know if they have them? There for a minute it was down 10.7%

It has been stuck at -10.64% for a while. The breaker may have been tripped.

It's becoming a slaughter. There will be some short term spikes to buy into. Not my game - my stones are a bit brittle for that game.

News Flash! Japan's Stock Market Trading Briefly Stopped! Friday. Futures trading stopped for the rest of the day.

The Osaka Securities Exchange and Tokyo Stock Exchange halted trading in Nikkei 225 Stock Average and Topix futures for 15 minutes after a plunge triggered a stop loss on each bourse. The futures were suspended because of a decline of more than 1,000 points and as the value of the underlying Nikkei average differed from the futures value by more than 200 points.

Yes. Quite. I have a neighbor who works at a local Japanese car retail store. No car sales in two weeks. Half of the staff were layed off yesterday. One part time lot boy remains washing all the cars lined up all over the lot. Wait until the Japanese auto assembly lines stop. 8O

And it will be for more than 15 minutes. It's on, folks. :)

Whoa- Nikkei collapsing, Hang Sen following suit. 10 % drops. Folks, you may not know this but in 1989, the Nikkei was valued at nearly 40,000. Today- less than 25 % its value.

Watch as the cookie crumbles. Will the Dow follow suit tomorrow?

While I think the Dow leads, and does not follow, I do think the Dow will continue to lead down.

I have this thing about 7,000 being bottom for a while. I don't know why- maybe because its half 14,000 and anything more than a 50 % drop in a year sounds crazy...but who knows at this point?

Right at the beginning of WWI, all the world exchanges closed for like 6 months to prevent panic selling. I've got a sneaky feeling that may be where we're headed. They are about out of tricks. The rate cut was a desperation move. It bought about 36 hours of calm which is about what you would have guessed. I don't really know what else they can do at this point but close the exchange.

How does that even work? Stock prices are frozen? No worldwide trading? How does that stop an economic meltdown? Suddenly people can't sell their assets? Wouldn't that lead to riots and blood on the street?
