You mean like back in the thirties, when unemployment hit 25%?

And yet, the society continued to function, in spite of the misery and deprivation. Remember, people were coming off the fat, dumb, and happy bubble economy of The Roaring Twenties.

They adjusted and rode it out. Bad things happened, of course, but life went on, just as it will over the next few years.

Some of you people seem to think we've evolved into a different species over the past few decades. You're wrong. We'll adjust and live very differently, simply because we'll have absolutely no other choice.

Calm down, for Christ's sake. You're revealing yourselves to be a bunch of pampered crybabies. Sure, times are going to get tough. Deal with it. Everybody else will. You hysterical pansies are the ones who are going to do most of the suffering, it appears. Perhaps rocc most of all.

Whassa matter, rocc? Is the prospect of great change more than you can handle? Does an economic contraction from the soaring heights of a gilded bubble age scare you that much?

Twenty thousand rounds of ammo, huh? Jesus. Get a grip, dude.

I'm no doomer, by any means, but I think you'd need to reflect on the situation differences before making any statements.

Population in 1929 was around 1.8 billion. World resources still vastly untapped compared to what we'd be working with now. We have no idea what unemployment levels could reach this time. Yes, we have technology on our side, but how does it all balance when looked at objectively?

+ 1, Jester!

I was thinking the same thing. This IS a website devoted to discussions of resource depletion and population overshoot, isn't it? Not to mention other related disasters in the making, such as climate change and the compounding effects thereof...

say, that reminds me...

Hasn't Zardoz been fond of pointing out that "it's like we're hitting the fast-forward button", particularly on climate change issues, but also in relation to PO issues? I seem to recall reading many such posts by Z in the past, well before I ever started posting here. So now that we're starting to actually feel the bite of collapse clamping down, is it possible that it is Zardoz who is freaking out a bit?

This reminds me of Stan Goff, who after so much thoughtful analysis and humanistic writings apparently snapped and renounced reason to become a new Jeebus-freak, even though in so doing he embraces the very epitome of social control and hierarchical power structures in society that he has taken such great enough issue with in the past as to run a website called "Insurgent American".

To me, it reeks of wanna-be prophets pissing their pants and crying for mommy when their darker "stories" start ringing true. THAT's more like a pampered crybaby in my view.

At least Rocc walks his talk and ACTS upon what he sees coming. Personally, I wouldn't even read this site if I didn't take these issues seriously and want to learn more about how to protect me and mine from the wolf at the door. Though I am not as prepped as Rocc and some others, I am way further ahead of the herd because of his, and others, insights and suggestions.

There are plenty of over the top posts here - and some that are actually very good intell, over the top or not.
