From there we will conquer the whole world. Just look at our huge military budget and the amount of nuclear weapons, cruise missiles and aircraft carriers that we have invested in, say compared to, hmmm, the USA...

Most of other Eastern European nations (perhaps with exception of Baltic states) are taking similar approach, but because they are weaker than Poland, they are not very vocal about it.


True, as I said, the Poles are just the most obvious example of this, but most eastern European "add ons" are playing the same game.

Well, they had the choice between a bankrupt and caught up in turmoil Russia or a stable and prosperous EU, I guess that choice was easy (outside of any animosity that was still out there).

The problem is, a lot of the prosperity in the Baltic states also came out of a misguided housing market, they are already hurting, but they are just too small and "out of the way" to be noticed yet.

Brits are perhaps best known, but I think that Irish are even more disillusioned.


The problem with the Brits is that I think there's a disconnect between the ruling class (that includes the Media) and the average Joe, the latter one did not appear to me as hostile towards the EU as the press and politicans are. It doesn't really surprise me though, the "upper class" is still miffed over the end of the Empire and hasn't quite digested that, one of the reasons why they did the Iraq adventure with the US, thinking it would restore the Glory.

Those two are funny too, they were the center of attention before the new eastern nations joined and their whole alignment with the US, they play the same game as Poland et. al. for pretty much the same reasons, they are fighting over the pigs through of the EU and they want to ensure they get their share of the slop.

The problem with the EU is that the idea was that everybody should be brought up and be helped, the idea behind it was that inequality within Europe lead to past conflicts, and I think they have a point there, the problem is that the countries that were helped (e.g. Spain, Ireland, Italy) decided that they rather take the money but instead of using it responsibly they just blew it on Gadgets and toys. It's a bit like Quebec handling the Federal handouts.

We MAY see a smaller EU, essentially central Europe, as far as the Brits are concerned I am all for filling in the Channel Tunnel again, I like their comedy and TV, but their political climate not to mention their police state and paranoia Europe and I can do without.

It looks like this may be happening. Today the UK govt is considering nationalising parts of the high street banks as their ability to get credit is drying up.


They really don't have a choice. If the money flees the UK will sink within days.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')s for the Euro countries I think with all this credit crunch malarkey it's dawning on the political classes that if you want to share a currency you need to have tighter political control across all states that use said currency.


That's not so much the question right now, there was some harmonization, the problem is that the Eurozone just didn't do it fast enough and they got a bit ahead of themselves, if the whole thing wouldn't have blown up now they would have had a chance to make it work, as to what will happen now.... Guess we'll see in the coming months.

Someone suggested the Confederate System as it is used in Canada for the EU and I think it makes sense, the problem is a lot hangs on the EU Constitution and this won't go forward anytime soon.

The good news is that with recent French, Danish and Irish rejections of EU proposed control it looks like the people are winning.

There is opposition in Germany as well, there was a reason why they never put it to a referendum.

You may end up eating those words. The problem with the Sterling is that is no longer a world reserve currency, unlike the USD and somewhat the Euro, but the BoE still acted like this. There is really NOTHING behind the pound right now outside of the belief that London is a good place to trade and park money, if there is any doubt about the UK Banking Industry this will pose quite devastating to the Pound.

My guess (and really, it's just a guess), we'll either see the Sterling or the Euro go up, but not both, whoever rises has the vote of confidence of the "buying public".

This will be interesting to watch (and it seems my neighbours are making popcorn, how'd they know?)

If the UK wants to be the world reserve currency again all they have to do is declare that 1 Pound= X troy ounces silver, or portion thereof.

Whichever fiat currency goes legit first is going to have a leg up on all the rest, people are sick to death of funny money bubbles at this point.

I've felt the same thing coming from the Irish I've talked to. They've been pro-Europe, and they're quite frank that joining up and using the transfer funds to build their IT industry is the best thing that's happened to them since independence. I just hope they can keep that in mind as times get tough.

Yeah, exactly. It's like they got addicted to empire... any empire. If it can't be theirs, then riding shotgun in another English-speaking empire is about 95% just as good.

Frankly, I'd back a currency of 300 million people with only a slight trade deficit this year over one of 50 million with a substantial one. If Britain had joined the euro back in '99, then their woes would be communal ones. As it is, they're hampered by having a separate currency. The EU can transfer funds but not help managed the problem in confidence, because it appears, and it is, entirely of Britain's own making.
