I am only 21 and learned about peak oil last semester. Since then, I have convinced most of my family that peak oil is real. In preperation, I have converted my college savings into precious metals and energy stocks. I have also purchased an sks and 2 cases of ammo. I purchased a book on self sufficient living, and plan on buying a bunch of #10 cans as well as a water filter system and solar cooker before the dollar isn't worth anything.

I had a nice day at work. Nice kids, special ed so not really academically inclined. They wanted to sing and they had been a bit on the chaotic side, not mean, just chaotic. So I let them sing. A kid got out a guitar and was strumming the chords to Angel Baby a sweet oldie. They turned out to be shy about singing so I told them my hypnosis story, how the hypnotist Dr. Dean hypnotized these folks on stage and one sang just like Frank Sinatra and a girl sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow beautifully. That got them going and I sat back for an hour watching and listening to them sing and have a good time.

I came upon a huge amanita muscaria mushroom today. I've read a lot about them, but have never seen a super large one. This one was about 8 inches across it's cap, quite red and white spots. I was able to tell the people I was with the name, and a lot of mythology associated with it. Why is this good news? Because it proves my brain is still working somewhat...and that's a relief. Plus, it was the best possible day for a hike after a boat ride to Saturna island, the most beautiful island in the Gulf chain...and my dog had a blast. Life IS good, if we let ourselves forget the misery and seriousness of it all, if just for a little while!

Some pleasures are free..

Took my beagle to a dog beach the other day. We have one in our town, and it's ok for dogs, but the water is kind of gross to swim in (causeway).

So I tried a beach couple towns south of me. The stars were aligned, it was a perfect beach day. The water was clear, perfect temperature, and overall fantastic, with a big sandbar just how I like.

My beagle wasn't too enthused about swimming, but she enjoyed herself nonethless. It was a blast seeing all the dogs out swimming and running around on the beach -- no leashes!

I also noticed how everyone at this beach actually chatted with strangers, and how friendly everyone was. I guess dogs break the ice, or dog people are just different.

So, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, just floating on my back in the perfect water, looking at the clouds like I did when I was a kid, golden retrievers and whatnot swimming all around me.

Yesterday a friend asked me to help lead a girl scout troop. She wants to teach then outdoors skills: campfire building, map and compass, first aid. We want to get them into doing some gardening. I'm stoked!

I survived the week with only minimal losses on my money. I had a friend over for dinner and a movie. I had another wicked ride. I made some more parts for my stirling project. My battle damage from the wicked ride has subsided considerably and my pre-arthritic knee has been mostly pain free as well. I read on PO.com another post from a member who was enamored with SPG. Poor SPG, I had a good laugh at your response!

What a lovely thread. Browsing the 7 pages it seems like I am reading through a new set of cultural values of the post peak world; friendships, good food, appreciation of your job, community etc.

My family is very excited that after a 6 month long negotiation we have just acquired 400 acres of land in western Panama close to the Costa Rican border. It is at 5500 feet above sea level in cloud forest habitat, open pastures with old growth forest and it is located at the top a valley and borders Central America’s largest wilderness, La Amistad National Park. Great land for potatoes, grazing, premium coffee, good water, fertile soils and just breaths magic with the proximity of this vast wilderness. We hope to finish up all are other projects and relocate there within the next 18 months. Here are some pics
