My first instinct is that they are filled with the same hubris as most other anthropic religions. The idea that among the decillions of cubic light years of the universe, Earth and humans are in any way, shape, or form an important part of it.
To believe in something miraculous, I'd have to see something miraculous. People saying "they've heard a spirit" isn't miraculous. A book of people saying they've seen miracles is not miraculous, either. My wife or parents saying they saw a miracle would be out of character, but also not miraculous.
And, as for seeing, I'm not much fun at magic shows, either.
