$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JoeW', 'I')f you think an engineer or geologist is well-paid, that's only because you are entirely unaware of what a fresh out of college doctor can get.

And, conversely, if you can possibly be happy without being particularly "well-paid" (I am speaking to a small self-actualized minority of possums here), there's always avoiding college altogether. I do IT for peanuts. I don't struggle against it. The advantage is, I get a cushy chair, time on websites, and occasionally fun mental games. I earn less than the working guys (plumbers, linemen) in my small town who never went to school. And, after paying student loans, I take home quite a lot less. Still, if it's stable and not too onerous, it's a better life than 99.99% of the human race gets.

Of course, I spend a whole lot less than they do, so I have a lot more in the bank. You figure that out without going to college, though.
At 1% annual growth, human bodies will incorporate every gram in the observable universe in approximately 10,170 years.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JoeW', ' ')Engineers do not have any power in the business world.

There is a small company you might have never heard of called ExxonMobil that has a board full of engineers.

Chairman & CEO of Exxon-Civil Engineer

Sr. VP Exxon-Petroleum Engineer

Another Sr. VP Exxon-Chemical Engineer

Sr. VP & Treasurer of Exxon-Industrial Engineer

I'm a controls/software engineer. I quit my job recently to re-tool my skills a bit. It looks like there is a fair bit of work in the energy industry. I'm trying to get more into microcontroller programming. Engineers are under compensated.

In terms of replacement cost that may be true. But, the great thing about the best engineers is that they really love their work! Many I know would do it for less than they are paid. Lots are just looking for interesting projects to work on. It's not universally true, of course.

defense contractors are always happy to hire warm bodies for whose time they can bill the government for. lack of problem-solving skills can be offset by a willingness to be a yes-man.

the private sector always needs people who can solve technical problems, communicate about technical stuff, extract a semblance of order from chaos, etc.

the pay varies from slave wages to "a lot".

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('joeltrout', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jbeckton', '
')Also important to note, most people going to school today are going to be working for 50 years.

50 years? My plan is to work max 27 yrs and retire.

Good luck, but most people will work much longer than that.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ell the good thing about the oil industry is many of the people are easily transfered into alternative energy such as wind and solar.

Yup, just like the autoworkers have "transferable skills" but it requires them to move around and follow the jobs. If thats ok with you, great, but an engineer in the energy industry will most likely be able to find a job anywhere in the country for their entire career which is a great benifit. Also, you failed to adress the hours worked being the main reason landmen and petrol engineers make more money. Its an important point to note for anyone looking into that field. You will be paid, but you will work your but off!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Landmen & Engineers are needed for every windmill or solar panel put on land. In fact, in the 80s many petroleum landmen started working for wind, untility, housing, and communication companies doing land work for them.

Again, thats a job that requires working in remote locations for contracts that will move around. Not appealing to everyone.

Thats why most of us engineers treat the petrol engineering job emails like junk mail. Good luck to you but its not for me and I don't think its for most people.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jbeckton', 'I') have been pretty busy with some recruting visits my company has to local colleges this fall and I was suprised to see the competition. I would say that about 60-65% of the companies at these fairs (job fairs are for ALL majors) are looking for engineers and many are paying for reloction on top of $60k+ starting salaries for new grads!

There are simply more jobs than engineers to go around now and that doesn't look like its going to change anytime soon. Even companies that are looking to reduce costs are doing so by hiring MORE engineers to increase the efficiency of their plant/product/service.

Just something to consider for young people are looking for a career that will weather the storm better than most.

You should become an engineer JB and grab one of these jobs...

At Texas A&M last week, we had over 300 companies attend the engineering career fair. The business career fair had much less. Luckily I am mechanical and there is a lot of demand for good MEs. I did notice that there was about a 5-10% drop in jobs available compared to last year, but there were still more job openings than graduating seniors.
