$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('timmac', 'v')ery little personal debt,,

That might be true as far as credit cards & student loans, but interest only loans for homes were pretty common in the 20s and many went into foreclosure when the depression hit.

We didn't learn the 1st time. The 2nd is going down as well. Will we repeat the same mistakes if we get a chance for round 3? Probably :-D

Justagirl :
What I mostly meant by little personal debt was not just during the 20's and 30's but at mostly any time in our American history.

Sooo many people are loaded down with debt and many business's as well,, here in Vegas every body has a new car/truck, big house, countless credit cards, paycheck loan stores out number any other business in this town, no wonder we have the highest number of forclosers in the country.

Many things are going to cause more economy problems in the coming months because of our large personal debts, if gas goes back above $4 a gal nation avg and food continues to rise there will be more problems than what our goverment can handle, just wait untill Christmas shopping time when sells are way down and what will happen with places like sears/target/small ma and pop stores/etc, we are only seeing the beginning of somthing bigger.

I Hope I am Dead Wrong,, But lots of folks here in Vegas are really worried about the economy because we survive mostly off the extra $$$ that America spends during vacations and that is the frist thing people cut back on.....

Just because Las Vegas residents have lived off of the excess and stupidity of the gluttonous masses doesn't mean they should act in the same manner. You'd think that by living in Vegas, they'd learn not to gamble...but you know what grifters say, "Con men make the best marks."

Your right about that many here in Vegas are addicted one arm bandits,, I know so many that have lost every thing from to much gambling and they steal and beg and go back to the casinos to give them more, the only thing that stops them is death.

I myself can not stand losing more than $20 than I leave,, I only use casino's for the cheaper food and bars..

Timmac - I agree with the rest of what you said. Walmart might be the only thing standing after Christmas :-D

Vegas? You ever think of relocating? Not sure i'd want to be there during this mess.

Vegas is doomed. Totally, and completely doomed.

When the economy hits the skids fully, LV is going to start the conversion to a ghost town.

Best bet is to stay open at 1% current size to cater to the rich and famous.

Build a city in the desert?

Great idea with oil at 10 bucks a barrel.
Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. Many more than half will die. It will occur everywhere, including where you live. If you fail to recognize this, then your odds of living move toward the "going to die" group.

I've tried to explain this to my Dad. He has a winter home there, as well as a piece of property on Blue Diamond Hwy. valued at north of 2million. I am encouraging him to get out of the property while it is worth something, but he refuses to listen. He also refused to listen to getting out of financials (70% of his portfolio) at the beginning of the year. He is still quite wealthy, and he says he believes in PO, but when push comes to shove, he won't cash out. This is really going to hurt him.

What do you think of the "pending" approval of the Paulson Plan? Market sure likes it, but there is a whole other round of issues ready to boil over.

This is the biggest mass deception since WMD, maybe even bigger. The repeated comments that the bailout will 'save' the US from recession are totally untrue.

The financial system is melting down. Gasoline shortages are spread accross a wide region. What comes next won't be very pleasant.

After all the talk about the bail out plan, it will take at least two weeks to get up and running (per Treasury officials) once it becomes law.

Meanwhile the banking meltdown will not get better, but actually accelerate for the worse. Investors in WaMu saw their heads cut off to save the FDIC from massive losses. All investors in common, preferred, and even bonds in any bank or bank holding company are now at risk of 100% loss of capital in the event of a FDIC takeover.

Everyone will want to protect what they have left, and the Fed will be forced to add hundreds of billions $ more in new fiat money just in the next few weeks to prevent a complete meltdown of the financial system.

Read Roubini's take on the bank situation HERE today, and freaked. Promptly told my wife to pay all the monthly bills online, to get the money OUT of our banks and to the creditors ASAP. Then went to town, checked the household account balance at the bank, and took out cash to get it down to a bare minimum. Took my paycheck from our business to the bank and cashed that, along with a customer's check that came in today.

With cash in my pocket, I did some shopping and called it a day. This was in line with our plan for last minute stuff. Finished now, got the mexican dinner from our local primo restaurant, salsa, chips, and Corona. I think I'm ready for the show to start now.
Local fix-it guy..

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')ave you wondered why the Treasury asked for a $700 Bn emergency package with the full force of the Fed behind them, and gave the Congress less than a week to deliver it? Either these fellows have lost their nerve or the markets are riding to a fall, and it could be terrific.
We've been looking for some event, something that would have created such an extraordinary set of actions as we have seen in the past few days. This just might be it. Special thanks to Yves Smith for flagging it.
Time to start settling those Credit Default Swaps for Fannie and Freddie (Oct. 6), Lehman Brothers (Oct. 10) and Lehman Brothers (Oct 23).
LIBOR is eight standard deviations from the norm, because the banks don't know who is holding what in their cards, but there might be some Aces and Eights in there. The TED spread is at an all time record high. An insurance company is said to be heavily exposed. Do you need to buy a vowel? Let's hope we get lucky.
Brace for impact.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')LENN BECK -RADIO SHOW -- "OCTOBER 3, 2008"

****** Broadcast on the "Stu Show"... (partial transcript)...

BECK:: i just got a note in from one of the guys i trust on the economy. A run on the shadow banking is system is accelerating, silent run on commercial banks is under way, a run on short term liability on corporate sector is under way, money markets and inner bank markets have shut down despite the senate passing bailout bill. we are facing a silent run on a huge mass of uninsured deposits of the banking system and run on insured deposits as small depositors are scared. There's also a run on money market funds and a serious run on hedge funds. there is a looming refinancing crisis for private equity firms and a run on short term liability of corporate sector as the commercial paper markets have frozen...there swill be a total ceasing of inner bank and money markets.

later on the show he says this

Beck:...im going to bring something that was told to me. it was told to me off the record so i cannot source it. Stu, u know my source. would u say the source is credible..

Stu: yes.

Beck: :this is second hand info but the source is beyond ur imagination. help me out here Stu im trying to be careful.

Stu: i want to make sure we're not freaking people out...

Beck: ...I want u to be prepared for anything. according to a very good source of mine the president said to this individual..he was very apocalyptic in his conversation with this individual and he (president) made the comment of something in regard to, we will do anything we can...if we survive. now this individual told me that was not said in a joking way. ... d I told u before if things fall apart people will panic. When u add fear with hunger and people losing jobs the fringes will rise up......you must not panic when this happen..and tell ur neighbors to relax when things get bad.Im thinking we have gone beyond the point of no return and the bailout wont calm the market down.
