Should I go to work tonight?

Unread postby jesus_of_suburbia_old » Fri 19 Sep 2008, 04:34:53

My current hospital's department is very short-staffed (more hours), but I don't do much clinically (bored to death, feel not needed). I was recently offered a job at a place whose staff is larger (less overtime) but are trained to have more clinical skills (job security, feel needed). The starting pay at the new place is $3 more an hour as well.

Everyone is saying that the economy is going to collapse in a few days. I don't want to do a twelve hour night shift on a Friday, but I've already called in sick twice in two months at my current place. I don't want to burn bridges, but the economy is collapsing and we are moments away from killing each other in the streets. Why should I spend my Friday night at work?

I have a girlfriend, so I pretty much have no money to begin with anyway.

So, should I go to work tonight? I'm young and need advice.

I know this is kind of dumb but cut me some slack. I'm surrounded by premature babies and none of them are trying to die so I'm bored. I've been here for about nine hours and am trying to stay awake.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Go to work.

It won't matter much (except a few lost hours of sleep) if all hell breaks loose in the next few days. On the other hand, it will help out a lot if it doesn't and you still have a job.

Best of luck.

Huh? If all hell breaks loose, I'll have worked for nothing. I'll have wasted a Friday night.

There are many countries in the third world where the economy has almost totally collapsed but people are still not killing each other in the streets on a massive scale. Crime rates will rise, perhaps sharply, but the majority will always have enough survival instinct to maintain some sort of social order and avoid chaos at all costs, even if they're unemployed and impoverished.

Whether that order will be maintained by the federal government or some other entity, remains to be seen.

That's all fine and good, but it doesn't answer the question of why I should go to work on a Friday night.

I worked 5 years doing 12-hour weekend graveyard shifts in a skyscraper, and know what it's like to be bored/tired, since I'd have to listen to colleagues whine about it all the time. Me, I kept busy. People wrote those books for a reason, you know.

Go to StumbleUpon if you need to find something novel to look at. And don't ditch jobs without 2 weeks notice. Be a professional, Jesus.

Jesus,

Go to work tonight if its worry about TSHTF thats stopping you. Stock markets in Europe are up 6% this morning. The Irish stock exchange was up 25% this morning but has given up much of its early gains. The unwinding has begun but it has a long long way to play out.

In the event of total economic collapse, I have to agree with Frederik. We will see a sharp rise in crime at least for a while but if you think its going to be like the remake of Dawn of the Dead with everyone runing around killing each other, you are sorely mistaken. Anarchy and chaos does not suit anyone, even and especially the evil minded.

There is no profit or gain to be made in a situation of total anarchy. You will find even in failed governmentless states such as Somalia that everyone is not running around killing each other. Peoples motivation has and always will be self preservation. Some semblance of order facilitates this.

PS.

Post a picture of your girlfriend here and I can make a more informed judgement as to whether or not you should go to work on a Friday night. You may indeed be better served staying at home with a tray of strawberries, whipped cream, chocolate sauce and a French maids outfit.

Paddy,

I don't know if she'd appreciate me posting her picture.

We've been dating for about eight months. In short, she's a bit bigger than I'd usually go for. Not disgusting in the least, but I've been trying to do that "let's work out together" thing to get her to drop a few. If she did, she'd be perfect, at least in my eyes. She has two things larger girls need: a pretty face and big boobs. She's also always up for a romp. She initiates just as much, if not more than I do.

Okay ditch the cream and the chocolate sauce. Still I like the mental image I'm getting.

She's a "bit bigger" than you'd usually go for??? And you're probably a "bit smaller" than she'd usually settle for.

Your language suggests that you're a class A misogynist and not ready for a real relationship with a sincere and genuine soul. I hope for HER sake, that I am wrong.

If your girlfriend is kind and good and loving, you should thank your lucky stars to have found someone to love and someone who loves you.

Sheesh.

I get the feeling that I would not want you "watching" MY premature baby.
Are you a grownup? When you took your job, you committed to providing a skill/service in exchange for payment.

If you are bored, find something productive to do: read and update your knowledge in your field; work on your prep or bug out list; do some isometric exercises.
If you do not like your job, get a different one.
Work on and improve yourself before you assume that you have the right to decide what is best for other people.

Any job has 3 critical features that make it acceptable. The Money, the Work, the People. If you have 2 out of 3, you keep the job. Just 1, there's not enough to keep you there. All 3, you have a dream job.

It sounds to me that current events and your future outlook have allowed discouragement to find a niche. This is the enemy, not the job, money or people.

You have 2 options:
1 Quit. Prove to the world you don't have the stones to hack it long before things start getting tough, wimp out, be the first one on your block to be swept aside. Want to go out and party with your friends? Can't handle the responsibility? Step aside to make room for someone else.

2 Drag your ass out of bed every morning just like the rest of us. Quit your bellyaching, endless whining, and suck it up. Are you special? You took the job, now do it.

If you don't man up, what will you think of yourself in the morning?
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--for ever."

Option 3:

Do the whole French maid/ fruit thing before you go on your shift and fantasise about doing it all again when you come home in the morning.

Ferretlover and kpeavey are exactly right Jesus. Go to work and on Monday apply for a job at the new hospital where you will feel more needed.
