$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Consensi', 'I') currently live in central Georgia and miss the food up there. If you brought your car and plan to stay in the City for a few years then get rid of it. You won't need it and it will become a big pain, as by law, you will have to get up early every morning to move it. Good luck and enjoy NYC.

Noooo wayyyy! I didn't bring my car. There are some things I miss about San Antonio: Family of course, Tex-Mex food, open spaces, but my car is something I definitely do not miss!

First Post, One Question

Unread postby yippleflipple » Wed 17 Sep 2008, 19:14:51

Hello,

I'm a 20 year old college student, living with my mom and only recently gotten serious about the economic and energy situation. Trying to spread the word without sounding like a fanatic

Im trying to convince her to buy gold. Is it too late to start buying gold and silver? Or is it never too late? I see the prices have been going up the past few years.

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Buy on the dips. Same for silver.

And just look after yourself, because mmasters is dead-on correct.

I see... please, tell me how I can track these "dips"
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nd just look after yourself, because mmasters is dead-on correct.

Yea, I'm beginning to experience this. I've mentioned it to a select few friends with discouraging results and I consider them insightful and intelligent people (sent them the martenson crash course vid). And most of the kids my age are pretty much retarded (which i guess goes hand in hand with the culture). I've noticed that people take it personally when you tell them their way of life is at stake... maybe later they will thank me.

Good for you, Yipple. MMasters is right; it's really early in gold's rise, but buy soon. Where are you from?

Yesterday I bought a woodstove. As a metal investment, I think this one will, pound for pound, beat the hell out of gold in the long run. At $214, and a weight of 132 pounds, it works out to just over 10 cents an ounce.

Buy over time and don't rush into anything you don't completely understand. Remember markets have crashed before and markets will crash in the future. Don't bet the farm and end up burned.

Coming out of the PO closet - Looking to connect in Calgary.

Unread postby Guy_Gardner » Thu 18 Sep 2008, 12:26:14

I've been lurking for a while, but have been cautious to reach out and let anyone find out I'm a "doomer". I see now that cautious cooperation is as important as discretion, and am ready to take that step.

I'm seeking to meet informally with other Calgarians to discuss local considerations and brainstorm, particularly in regards to future planning.

Downtown cafe is sufficient, real name optional.

If interested, drop me a line.

Gardner.

Gardner, you might have more success if you joined up with a permaculture group, home improvement group, or other such meetup.org group.
I know we had a meetup group here in Chicago, and all we did was bitch about things, but that become old really fast. You have to "do" something to make it worthwhile, like gardening, like solar or wind retrofits, etc. The problem is, most folks don't have the time nowadays to just sit around and complain. It's good for one or two sessions, but to get an active group, it's difficult.

Most of us here in Chicago have taken action in other arenas, such as those listed above, including voluntary simplicity, and the livable city movement. (good public walkways, bike paths, good public transportation.) You have to get active on the public policy front as well, talk with your alderman/town council on how they're approaching the aspects of "powerdown" in your area. What's on the books for your town concerning issues such as waste management, lighting, public safety, park district, (land useage by folks to possibly grow food on.) in your area? These issues might be of use to a group that wants to concern itself politically.

You might want to get ahold of some copies of some of the "Peak Oil" movies out there and show them at the library (neutral spot and in most cases free.) and have a discussion group too. That might spark a group that develops into an "action" group. ("End of Suburbia" is one that had been making the rounds.)

But we found out complaining doesn't "do" anything. You have to get "doing". Pick something that interests you, get involved yourself, and then branch out from there, and get the best folks involved . (lots of complainers are good at that, but don't translate well to "doers".)

Good luck with your city Gardner!

What I had mentioned was that when we tried that approach here in Chicago, most folks had stuff going on and they didn't have the time for yet *another* thing to take up their time. Folks came out once or twice and you never saw them again.
So, if you are to have something more "consistent"; then doing something is preferable to just "touching base" with people.

Just trying to give you some insight to what we've already done here. :)

Good luck to you!

I'm going to throw this thread off on a bit of a tangent, the only reason I'm doing so is because I received a PM about it. I was originally going to reply directly via the PM, but perhaps this will be read and appreciated by others. Apologies if this tangent annoys you.

Honestly I don't follow peakoil.com that much anymore (although I do pop in every now and then to the economic forum to read MrBill's very, very insightful posts) Here's why I don't follow it too much anymore, and why I would suggest doing a lot more reading before taking the "doomer's prep stage":

I started reading and researching peak oil in 2004 (as you can see by my join date and number of posts) It rattled me extensively as I was seriously uneducated about the topic at the time. I became a frequent visitor to this site and my appetite for energy related news and information became ravenous. I also became pretty depressed about the whole thing.

Over the years I have done a tremendous amount more reading and I've also attended the UofC's IEEE speaker sessions too. (I highly recommend those) With much more info under my belt and 4 years of reflection, I have a very different point of view now - and that is that we are headed for a gut wrenching adjustment, but doom due to peak oil is not on the horizon. This thread is not the place for me to extrapolate on my position.

In general I think blukatzen has good recommendations: living locally and sustainably is good regardless of what happens with Peak Oil. But as someone who has 4 years of this topic under his belt, I'd caution you to do more research before "prepping". peakoil.com is slanted hard towards the doomer side of things, and as with any topic it's best to get all the facts and a full sampling of viewpoints before betting the ranch on any one outcome.

I'm willing to discuss things further via PM but this thread isn't the place to continue any discussions on this matter.

Cheers and best of luck,

FoT

It doesn't annoy me in the least, FO2. Your insight is really appreciated, and all the more relevant as you are a fellow Calgarian. I'm very concerned, but do my best to ensure our preps are complementary to our life, and not disruptive. So far, so good.

Your response was not what I was seeking, or intended to find, but I see the value in it nonetheless. I'll PM you.

first time posting... long time reader

Unread postby Dawn » Sat 20 Sep 2008, 12:25:30

I just thought I'd introduce myself. First thing is my name is Dawn... :) I have five kids and am happily married.

I have been aware of peak oil for about 5 years now, and am preparing as fast as I can for this rapidly changing world. We owned a business which I sold about a year ago, and moved to Michigan. Currently I am a student again.

Anywho, that's about it. I'm looking forward to reading, participating, and learning from the members of this site.

Regards,
Dawn
