Doly, even in 2000 when oil was $10-$20, Western countries still had a great debt problem, it is not because of peak oil.

Agreed. (And again I'm off-topic...apologies.)

The massive debt bubble we face today has two basic components: the steadily increasing imbalances of petro-dollar macro-economics since the 1970's; Greenspan's catastrophic plan to avoid the naturally resulting recession of the 2000 tech bubble collapse by inflating a much larger real estate bubble and thus keeping the U.S. economy going via a construction boom and MEW (mortgage equity withdrawal) consumer spending.

The coincidental timing of peak oil and the great petrodollar/housing credit bubble collapse is one of those historic convergences which an old history prof of mine claimed was the cause of all great watershed moments in history.

Western countries were running current account deficits then, but not at the levels they are now. I don't think people were saying in 2000 that the situation was unsustainable. Everybody is saying that now.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')re you kidding me? How do you think they transport meat, not to mention the feed for the animals from which the meat comes? Well, at least they don't refrigerate the feed.

Well, the important point is per food calorie, Lettuce has very few calories per weight, and takes lots of room, is fragile, and is also easily spoiled. Lots will be trown away at all the stages of the growing and selling chain. I am talking about the input of energy at all stages compared to what is actually eaten.

Some meat, like grassfed lamb, does not require very much transported feed input.

Until a few decades ago, lettuce was not sold all year around. It was only sold locally, in the local season. In less industrialised times, it just was not worth it. Meat was earlier sold over longer distances - altough in preindustrialised times it was cured and salted rather than fresh or frozen.

Of course I agree that most veggie food require less energy input than meat.

Doly it was unsustainable back then too. There was a book back in the 90's called Bankruptcy 1995.

Vegetarianism causes brain damage

Postby Plantagenet » Sun 14 Sep 2008, 23:53:41

New research shows that vegetarians are at risk of brain damage. Their poor diet results in brain shrinkage.

Vegetarians suffer from "brain shrinkage."

So the next time you feeling like calling some freako peacenik vegetarian a "pea-brain,"....restrain yourself. Its not nice to make fun of people with brain damage. 8)

Man, I hope this is a bunch of nonsense. My IQ's so low I can't afford to lose any more points. 8O

Anyhow, since eating meat causes severe planet damage, and since meat eaters know this, yet keep doing it anyhow, meat eaters must be even dumber than dumbed down shrunken-brained vegetarians.

Which means meat eaters are loaded down with a whole truck load of serious dumb, folks!

Hi Eastbay:

Hey...sorry. I didn't realize you were a vegetarian.

Darned doctors tell people one thing is healthy, and then 20 years later they tell people the healthy diet was actually unhealthy.

No problem man. I was just having some word fun, as I'm sure you were too! :-D

In a few months I'll be at four years vegetarian. It's just another life change stemming from my (re) discovery of peak oil back in the summer of '04 and the resultant changes to my thought patterns regarding my personal impact on earth.

*sigh*

The problem is not people eating meat. The problem is 6.7 BILLION people eating meat.

Ok, well... really the problem is 6.7 billion PEOPLE, period.

I forget who it was I was reading once who pointed out that there is a finite amount of biomass on this planet, and the more of it you convert into human bodies, the less of it there is for other uses. It's as simple as that...

Congratulations.

You were WAY ahead of me in finding out about peak oil. I'd never really taken it seriously until I met Prof. Ken Deffeyes during his visit to the University of Alaska in late 2005.

I was just out moose hunting. Trying to subsist more off the land from hunting and fishing is part of my personal response to peak oil. I guess its just an unforeseen benefit that eating mooseburgers and salmon filets can help my brain stay big.

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

As far as the brain shrinkage, I've read that the anthropological evidence indicates an 11% reduction in average hominid brain size since the advent of agriculture, and it is directly attributed to the displacement of flesh as a primary protein source in the diet by grains and legumes.

Those guys are hilarious. Are they getting paid by the meat farmers of Amerika or McDonald's? Plus they should know that some people are born with no brain at all and live a normal life. I can't remember the scientific name for this, maybe it's a no-brainer!
Prez.Bush is an example of someone with not much of a brain and he eats meat everyday, but then his brain can't shrink anymore can it. Eating red meat causes wars! Look at the planet right now, can't you see how violent it is. Now look up at the moon, very peaceful, why, because they are all vegetarians that live up there.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', 'M')y understanding is that there are very few vegetarians in Alaska.

Why? Alaska Vegetarian Society. Probably even more ostracized than liberals! I've caught a few interviews with a left wing blogger in AK since Palin became the nominee, they both started with "You must have a really lonely job!"

Meat? It's what's for dinner! Was it the Sioux or the Blackfeet who primarily chowed down on buffalo, down to the blood?
