"Ever since the world ended"- DVD

Unread postby Rod_Cloutier » Sat 13 Sep 2008, 10:05:13

This new DVD release was a very believable and realistic film about the lives of survivors of the collapse of modern civilization in the west. Although the cause of collapse in this film was one of a plague, this film does justice to what actual realities would be like for survivors of a large scale population die-off.

The film is presented in the form of a documentary of survivors talking about their experiances. It was exceptionally very well done. Set 12 years after the collapse, in what is left of San Francisco, the film focuses on how people are 'getting on' with living rather than on the causes of the collapse.

You see paranoid and distraught people who are alienated from the mainstream doing bad things. You see a younger generation that has grown up not knowing about tv's, video games, and indoor plumbing, ect. You see survivors who are engineers, artists and teachers who are still putting their skills to use and who have not given up on their humanity or civility.

In the film people talk about the relief of not having the stresses of modern life; ie the 9-5 workweek is toast, people have more freedom to do whatever they want, and they are more in touch with nature and their surroundings. The population has crashed to a level that most people can know one another, so problems of isolation are gone, but at the same time life is more dangerous. How do small, subsistance- scavanger communities deal with the collapse of large scale infrastructure? How do a small number of people with limited resources deal with issues of crime, especially of the crimes of violent offenders who are a danger to themselves and to others?

The younger generation is also growing up and doesn't want or care to remember the past, or mourn it's passing like their elders, they have their own agenda, and its not what the survivors of the die-off want it to be.

This film was stunning in its implications. A must see for anyone who is concerned about the fact that our society is heading quickly towards a collapse event of some sort!

Also available on Netflix. I agree with your description, although as entertainment it was a little slow I thought. The attitude of the younger kids in the film was particularly interesting.

I just watched it and I really liked it; the acting is great, it feels so... real, so natural. It does feel like a documentary.

I think that peakoilers will specially like this film. I highly recommend it!
