The drive through Big Sur is very pleasant. I don't know how badly it got messed up by the recent wild fires there though. Another terrific ride is across the San Diego Coast Range to the desert. The strange other worldly rock outcroppings of granodiorite are breathtaking.

I stayed in Big Sur on my honeymoon. Loved it there, but the drive, not so much. It's lovely going north of SLO for awhile, but then you get to the cliffs. I have a pretty bad height phobia and drove my hubby crazy, especially on the way back south.

Driving on 101 in Washington, out to the coast through the Olympic forest is great. Huge trees, mountains and beaches all at once. The driftwood on some beaches consists of massive tree trunks.

The northeast countryside in October is slightly surreal as the leaves all turn.

Just drove around in the coastal South, down roads lined with twisty old oaks dripping Spanish moss.

We're on the local "scenic tour" for car clubs, so I guess our one-lane county road is considered scenic. So that's good enough for me. It's especially pretty down by the river.

There are a lot of nice drives around here, in a small-scale kind of way.

The Most Scenic Drives in America

ISBN#0-89577-862-9

An excellent book detailing 120 of the best scenic routes in America. At one time I had planned to drive every one. To date I've managed about 50, but probably won't get much further now.

My favorites to date would be those through Utah and Wyoming.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

Ludi, that is pretty. Small-scale is good. :)

Large-scale can be inspiring, unless you're constantly worried about falling over a cliff.Image

I didn't know they had roads in Alaska. Thought it was all airplanes and dog sledding up there. 8)

Yup. There are a few roads, but no gas stations, so we have to use dog teams year round.

In the summer we use cars with the engines ripped out---We put the dog teams INSIDE the cars to protect them from the mosquitoes. Just their legs hang out through little holes to power the cars.

That helps keep the dog teams fit to pull the dog sleds in winter.
