$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', 'H')ow about having a few mini conventions at the same time in a handful of different locations? That way we wouldn't have to burn so much [s]fossil fuel[/s] cash getting to one distant single location.

That's how I've always felt, too. People flying around the globe to attend ASPO conferences seems more than a bit gauche, like making the devil horns symbol in church.

One possibility is using video conferencing in some capacity. Next best thing to getting everyone in the same room. Not intimate one-on-one though.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')or example, we could have them in a half dozen places such as possibly Houston, Portland, Boston, SF Area, and maybe a few other places such as Sydney and London. I think it would be great! :)

That'd be keen, I don't think we have any strenuous tiffs in the Portland crowd. Dunno about your situation, mos. Is Tyler on your enemies list?

You know, I bet we have a half dozen from around Portland who could meet up some day anyhow. I tried a few times to meet individually with a few near here but for one reason or another it didn't pan out. Maybe they didn't like my flag. Who knows. Who cares. I think it would be really neat.

I'm around 45 minutes scootering distance or 90 biking from downtown btw.

Perhaps it will have to be a convention of the mind.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Heineken', 'P')erhaps it will have to be a convention of the mind.

Let's not give up on this idea quite yet, Heineken. So many other so-called "fringe groups" have regular conventions, such as the Mars Society, which holds conventions each year, alternating between Boulder, CO and some other place in North America every other year. I went to the one in 2002, in Boulder...it was great fun (this was back in the days when I still had hopes that humanity would be able to get off this rock, before I received the bad news about peak oil). This group was very diverse, lots of libertarian-minded types, a real geek-fest...LOL. If an organization as "fringe" as the *Mars Society* can pull this off, there's no reason why we can't either. Just a matter of having enough of us that want to do this sort of thing. Our membership is increasing by leaps and bounds, there are local Meet-up Peak Oil groups going on all across the country, and I'm certain there are many folks who are lurkers on this board that would jump at the chance to go to an actual convention.

As for the point about having the convention in the east being unfair to our western members, I just feel there are a lot more members who live in the east in proportion to those that live out west, so that's something that'd have to be taken into consideration. But I'd not be opposed to any location, not by a long shot. If it was held out in Portland, Oregon, I'd still jump at the chance to go...no doubt about that. I do think it should be held in a place that at least has some sort of attraction...K.C. doesn't have that much to offer in this regard, as opposed to someplace like Boulder, for instance. :-D Also, if this was an annual event, the location city could be rotated around the country, such as Orlando, FL one year, Washington, DC the next, Madison, Wisconsin the year after, then out to Portland and so on and so forth.

Solid comments, Byron.

I was in Kansas City many years ago (1980s)---to attend a AAAS convention, actually---and enjoyed its emptiness and gloominess and seediness. It seemed almost like a ghost town. It's probably changed since then, though.

I suppose one reason PO.com hasn't had conventions is that it isn't a dues-collecting organization. Usually such membership organizations divert some percentage of the dues toward holding a periodic convention.

Requiring annual dues would be a good idea, I think. It would select for a higher level of commitment and motivation among members than is currently the case, and make possible more services (such as conventions) than just giving people a place to chat online. The money could also be used to help define and advance the mission of the organization.

But that's a whole 'nother evolutionary step, and I don't know enough about the ownership and organization of the current PO.com to know if there'd be any interest in taking that step.

You should do what we do on another forum: decide to have a meetup and whoever shows up, shows up.

I doubt you need a huge building; maybe ten people will show up to something like this in the best case scenario.

I would go to a convention if one was held. At this point getting to something national would be cost prohibitive for me, but regional would probably work, as would something less formal in my area. I like reading about and occasionally discussing peak oil related issues here, but talking to other people in person can be rewarding as well. I've met individuals in person who I got acquainted with through the internet before, with varying results, but never an entire web forum. To be honest, I'd be pretty nervous about going but at the same time I think it would be fun and enlightening.

Byron et al., there just doesn't seem to be enough interest. I started this thread two years ago and there've been only 50 posts (many of them mine). That's underwhelming.

Maybe people could organize statewide meetups, at best. I'd certainly go to a Virginia one.

It is interesting, the few folks from here I've met in person or on a landline and me have mostly talked about the other members here.

I think we are so diverse in views and strategies and such we have little new to talk about that we haven't talked about here.

Perhaps we are preparing for a future without cheap transport to convention centers...

Well we will have to see if they can fit us into the hall in between
the Influenza Seekers International and the Constipation Club this
winter. You do have to remember, the worser it gets, the righter
we were, and the smugger we be. Maybe we can just send
a delegate to the Optimists Convention and try to bum them
out instead. Last week I went to the Mensa meeting here
and demanded they put out a Mensa for Dummies book so
I can have a shot at joining.

We can have badges, light blue for cornucopians, and red for doomers, to identify ourselves, something like this: see link.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Zardoz', 'T')he best thing about the Internet is its anonymity. Finding out who we all really are would be totally disastrous.

Forget it...

I bet people would be very civil, maybe even quiet or reserved in person (in some cases).

My guess is, some of the loudest superdoomers would turn out to be like Milton (anyone watch Office Space) shuffling around and muttering about their doom-proof stapler.

The rest would all be friendly folks one could actually have a beer with (if inclined to drink beer).

Just a guess. Doesn't sound disasterous, it just sounds like a typical office party.
